e trex help

I am new to this game and want to do a good job. I just bought the Garmin eTrex, the one in the yellow case. I have a really good idea how to leave a chach and mark its location. But with this unit is it possible to enter a way point? If not how do I use it to find a chach?

Hi ZoeDog,

 

To enter a waypoint go to the menu page (the page that list things like mark, waypoint, route, etc.) Use the page button on the right side of your etrex to get there. Once you get to the page use the up and down buttons at the top of the left side of your etrex to highlight the waypoint section. Push the enter button (bottom button on the left side).

Next press the up or down button unitl you highlight the lat/lon section at the bottom of the page. Press enter again. Now using the up and down buttons you can highlight the portion of the lat/lon you wish to change. Press enter and the use the up&down buttons again to page thru numerical or aplhabetical change options. When you are finished making changes hit the up/down buttons until you highlight OK/hit enter. Play around with it. It sounds a little more complicated than it is. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Its all a bit new to me. I just set my first cache way early this morning. I will work on finding a way point the way you told me, Thanks a bunch.

I have read in the etrex manual (for the yellow one) A quick tip. like for MOB( Man Over Board)on other gps's. Once you have your eTrex tracking, if you press and hold the enter key it will save a waypoint with the current readings, using the basic numeric flag icon. I dont own my own etrex yet, so i cant say if this works or not.

Yes this seems to work from any page, if you hold down on the enter button it will mark the way point.

I just got my Vista, and appreciate the help for the yellow etrex, but you lost me somewhere. I can not locate where/how to enter lat/long in this unit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

I'm sure the Vista interface is the same as the Legend. To enter coordinates go to the Main Menu page. Choose Mark Waypoint, and when it takes to the screen with the little guy holding the flag, use the click-stick to highlight the field with the Lat. and Lon. Again push the Click-Stick and this time a little key pad will appear on the screen, you can simply type the numbers in, and that's all there's to it. After you've entered the coordinates you might want to change the symbol or name, but be sure to hit OK at the bottom so that it is recorded on your unit's memory.

Another way (I don't have the model you mention but think this will work as well) press and hold enter, the mark waypoint page will come up, scroll down to the coordinates, press enter and you can enter from there.

 

I'm at work and don't have the unit in front of me but this should be a good shortcut.
