New To This Stuff

i just recieved a cobra 500 for christmas and am trying to learn the ins and out of the instrument i found out this weekend while snowshoeing that after inserting a waypoint i have to carry the gps in my hand to register a track/route is this normal i cant' just leave it in my shirt pocket while i travel? where can i find some information such as gps operation for dummies.i would like to realize the potential of this tool as i spend a lot of time in the bush making trails for myself.i do most of my hiking northeast of toronto ont. canada.is this gps a good one in your opinion?thankyou for your input. You probably should not keep your GPS in your shirtpocket. Depending on the type of antenna, you may have to hold it in a certain postion for best reception. Units with patch antennas like to be held flat, fact pointing skyward. Units with a quad helix antenna like to be held upright.
