Kerry. Posted November 3, 2002 Posted November 3, 2002 How much different? If it's in the few hundred+ feet then check the Datum's are the same. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go Quote
+IFR GPS Posted November 3, 2002 Posted November 3, 2002 The GPS 38 was one of Garmins earlier units. I think the 38 is about 5 or 6 years old now. It was also built with a 8 channel reciever, not a 12 channel. I used to have a 38, and had bad problems keeping it locked on, even under light tree cover, and it always took 2 or 3 minutes to acquire. I had problems with it wandering, but that was when SA was still turned on. To check the accuracy, get out a good topo map, and find the coordinates of a known location, then go out and see if your GPS agrees. Quote
Kerry. Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 The 38 originally appeared in about 1992 and the MultiTrac-8 trademark was a play on words as it tracked a maximum of 8 sats through a single channel. What let it down was the antenna but that basically changed with the 45 family and the "latest design" (then) in antenna's. As for accuracy well they gave little away (if anything) to anything. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go Quote
stevekrans Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 (edited) I bought my GPS 38 in 1998 as a refurb, so they can be up to 10+ years old at this point. Just started on this little hobby this last week and pulled the 38 out for the first time in about 8 years and it has taken me within 5-10 feet of each cache so far. The signal does get weak if I put it in my pocket or bag for a moment. Other then that, it's working like a champ, just like it did when I first bought it. Edited October 1, 2008 by stevekrans Quote
