On And Off E-mail Problems

Every now and then I stop receiving e-mail from signal.Groundspeak.com. Here is the SMPT error log:

2004-06-03 07:53:52 SMTP protocol violation: synchronization error (input sent without waiting for greeting): rejected connection from H=signal.Groundspeak.com [63.251.163.165]

On my SMPT server, I have a setting set that will reject any incoming mail sent that doesn't wait for the initial session greeting and just blasts the message in. This is extremely popular in the spammer crowd (not waiting for the greeting, since it slows down the mass mailer programs), and about 90% of the spam coming in to our server is rejected with this setting. I really don't want to have to turn this setting off.

Any thoughts on why sometimes this happens and then later, it just starts working again? Any suggestions on what I can do on my end?

I've also started seeing email problems from signal.Groundspeak.com over the past week, although my log entries are different. I have many entries like this in my log:

Jun  3 13:10:34 NOQUEUE: Null connection from signal.Groundspeak.com [63.251.163.165]
Jun  3 13:10:37 NOQUEUE: Null connection from signal.Groundspeak.com [63.251.163.165]
Jun  3 14:00:34 NOQUEUE: Null connection from signal.Groundspeak.com [63.251.163.165]
Jun  3 14:17:11 NOQUEUE: Null connection from signal.Groundspeak.com [63.251.163.165]

Looking at the sendmail source code indicates that this condition is only logged in one of two situations:

  • a QUIT comand is sent prior to MAIL (or EXPN, VRFY, or ETRN)
  • too many unrecognized commands are received

The occasional watchlist email arrives okay. But several pocket queries are MIA.

I'll also contact Elias directly.

Thanks...

About the same time as Markens last error, my error log shows these:

These batches of errors occured periodically (between 15 to 30 minutes apart). The next batch that came, at 14:50:11, came through just fine, and I have received everything without errors since (which was the case when I had this same problem on Friday, but it cleared itself up some time Sunday.) I can provide you with logs back to May 26, if you are interested.

Looks like Marky and I are seeing effects of the same (mis)behavior. Patterns in my logs are very similar to his. The mail problem cleared up for me very soon after my last post, and mail has been received okay since.

Sometime Sunday around 11:30am I started getting the errors again, and I haven't received any e-mail since. I just checked and I'm still getting the errors... there's no need for me to post the errors since they are the same as before.

I sent off an e-mail to admin a few days ago, but only got the robot reply. It sure would be nice if I could get this fixed up.
