+The Goodcacher's
I'm just trying to get the most out of my $400 investment and I am wondering what are some practical (and not so practical) uses for the proximity waypoint function. I know what it is ... just can't figure many uses for it. What are some of yours? THANKS! Quote Link to comment
eltsu
In some countries we have fixed radar stations on highway where they will automatically measure speed and take a picture of your vehicle and send speeding ticket to home. Proximity waypoint will help to remember those(by beeper) and you have time to check your speed in advance before you arrive one of those stations Quote Link to comment
+peSHIr
In some countries we have [police speed cameras]. Proximity waypoint will help to remember those(by beeper) and you have time to check your speed in advance before you arrive one of those stations Well, I thought about trying to use my Garmin GPSmap 60C for that as well (couldn't think of any other uses that would be practical for me), but as it can only support about 10 (or is 12?) proximity waypoint out of the hundreds/thousands of possible waypoints its memory can hold this is next to useless in practice since you'll never be able to mark all the cameras you get near to on a regular basis. Also I find it totally irritating that you not only get an audio message when entering the proximity circle, but also when you exit is and that you need to press a button to get rid of the message. All of this could be device related (other GPSs will no doubt be able to handle proximity data differently, as MapSource data can contain proximity data for any waypoint in the file) but that does not really help me. So this feature is really quite useless in practice. Quote Link to comment
+The Goodcacher's
Well I have a GPSmap 60CS and I have read on the wishlist post for more than 12 in a couple different places but I can't seem to find any uses for them (except the one above) so what's the point of having them? topografix
You could place a proximity waypoint on top of a shallow reef near your house, and then you'd never have to worry about grounding your oil tanker. Oh, you only use your GPS for geocaching? Nevermind... Quote Link to comment
eltsu
You can set proximity alarm for a house of the mother in love... Then you don't drop by accident there Quote Link to comment
+Rubberhead
I use them for hidden obsturctions in the fresh and saltwater place I fish. There are several rock jetties that are hidden (but very dangerous) at high tide. Quote Link to comment
K-OS2233
They can also be used for No-wake zones on water. I think they were developed strictly for marine use. I tried using it for radar hotspots in my area but then I can be driving on a side street and that darn alarm goes off. Quote Link to comment
+trippy1976
I wish you could add a waypoint as a proximity waypoint from the find/view waypoint areas. Can you? Am I missing it? Then you could add 12 caches on your "todo" list to the proximity alerts and if you happen to be close to one it'll let you know. Quote Link to comment
