Suggestion to help get more $ for Geocaching.com

Would you pay to have an email address of:

your-username@geocaching.com ?

I would. $1 a month would be good. Maybe a bit more. I think this would be a good way to help support our favorite website.

Jeremy, what do you think? Is this being looked at as a future feature.

I would go for just about any kind of value added service on a pay-per-usage system. Would $1/month cover bandwidth cost? Would the revenue be a significant source of income?

So long as the basic services of geocaching is free, I'm game for just about anything else being charged a nominal fee.

Personally, I think (*PLEASE NO HATE MAIL FOR THIS!!*) Jeremy should collect a royalty fee for people running their own scripts powered by geocaching.com for other 'competing' sites. Don't know what the backlash for that would be, though.

I like your thinking, though.

What the? icon_redface.gif

You know what's sad? I looked on the site to see if I could donate somewhere and the very first thing I did was scroll to the bottom of the main page. I looked so intently on the links at the bottom that I missed the obvious PayPal icon. Duh! icon_biggrin.gif

I would love to have a geocaching email account so that I don't have to file through all the junk on my hotmail account. That would just simplify things for me. icon_smile.gif

I wander from here to there looking for. . .my mind? And then I find it in the cache.

Not to comment one way or another on money and this site (Yes, I have given)

If you need the Yourname@GC.com address to sort mail, you're going about it wrong.

Use filters on your computer and have them sort by whatever criteria you need. I'm on a half dozen mailing list and get a dozen spam messages a day.. But none of that winds up in my "inbox".

I chose LaurenCat because LaurenKittenPoniesFlowersPinkSunshineFairyMeowMeowRainbowHeartLoveBunnyKissKiss was just too F-ing long. - Mopar

Oh...

Back about eight million years ago when dinosaurs were logging in at 2400 baud.

AOL offered the ability to buy gifts for other users, a common gift being "time".

Usage was hourly back then so having someone kick a little access time your way was much appreciated. You didn't need to know the persons real name, just their handle.

Amazon will let you send gifts to an email address.

Paypal will let you send cash.

Geocaching.com could offer it's wares for such altruistic interactions. If I want VentureForth to have a few more Travel Bugs to play with, it would be nice for this to be possible.

P.S.

I gave up on AOL about the time of the big thaw.

I realise this is a very unpopular concept, but what about the idea of limited commercial caches? What if a business could pay a monthly fee to post caches advertising their businesses. There would have to be some major restrictions: Types of businesses (no porn, etc.), types of advertising (no huge obnoxious graphics plastered on the web page, maybe just a single, small graphic in a specific place on the page), etc. I would also suggest a different icon for commercial caches - a barrel with a $ on it. Maybe even a requirement of having the word COMMERCIAL as part of the cache name. As long as commercial caches met very specific rules, I would support allowing them on the site as a way to generate income. Jeremy would need to establish a written contract with very specific and very stringent requirements, would need to have a very thorough approval process, and would need to be able to 'pull the plug' on caches that violate their agreements. What do the rest of you think?

Chob,

I'm so sorry for making any kind of a comment at all. If I knew you were going to slam me like that I would have thought through it some more to try and REALLY piss you off. icon_wink.gif

be great too. I have several 5 gallon katamala olive containers that I'd be happy to clean up, paint, and donate to jeremy for just this purpose. I'd also be interested in purchasing a ready-made weatherproof GeoCaching explanation sheet for caches available in different sizes from a mini-booklet for smaller caches, to a full sized sheet for larger caches. Sure, people can make their own, but if you're shopping on GC.com for travel bugs and you see a kit consisting of a container, TBs, pre-made explanation sheets, GC.com cache labels, and a log book...I think you'd be more inclined to do some "one stop shopping."

I have seen many threads containing exceptional Geocaching items that many of you have made yourself. Often I have wanted to buy them but they are not for sale because of licensing issues and such. If we want to help support this site (and I know we do) then maybe we need to get a little creative with a way to distribute Geocaching items in a way that supports the site.

For instance: How about setting up an area showcasing user made geocaching items. Jeremy would get them at cost, allowing our contribution to be in effort and creativity. He could sell them on the site at a reasonable markup to support the sport. We would all be free to buy or not buy knowing that when we do we are supporting this great site.

I am glad this thread came up. I did the paypal thing some time ago but have not thought about it again until now. This site certainly deserves my continued support because of my continued (constant) use. I for one am heading for that paypal link right now.

Happy caching;

I'd be most happy to donate signature blocks to the website. A kit of 144 could be sold there so that who ever wanted to have a signature quilt signed at their own caches could. The when the blocks were signed a quilt coudlbe made up so that the cache owner could have something to show for all the work that goes into placing a good cache. I've been saving all the left over pieces of fabric and cutting into 2" squares so that I can make the signature blocks as needed.

Something like half.com where you can buy and sell (not auction) through a website and a portion of the proceeds gets deposited into geocaching.com's paypal account?

That'd Be Groovy!

Either that, or let the Groundspeak folks start buying ideas from cachers, mass produce them, and sell 'em from their site. Either way, there's $$ in them thar cachers! (Not me, though, OK? I'm poor.)

Chobi, feel free to send travel bug tags in care of McGrew Branch

Heh heh heh! I may actually buy some on Friday. I lost my credit card, though. icon_frown.gif

Do they make Japanese travel bug tags? Hmmm...
