Signal booster (?)

OK, we've all seen the ads for that little patch that goes under your cell phone battery to boost the signal reception.

 

First, do they actually work?

 

Second, how exactly do they work?

 

Third, would it work for a GPS, or could one be developed if different frequencies are involved. Or would it cause it to pick up every signal reflected off every tree, leaf, etc?

 

Fourth, do I ask too many questions...

A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ?
