Take a peak at the inside of the Garmin 76S

Anyone else noticed that there is no ROM in there? Which puts an end to the discussion about if Garmin's basemaps can be changed after the fact or not. Since there is a 32 MB flash memory, out of which 24 MB is available to the user, it's easy to figure out that the remaining 8 MB contains the basemap.

There is another 2 MB chip for the firmware and user data, like waypoints, and 0.5 MB RAM for working memory.

So, since it's in flash memory just like the maps the user loads, the basemap can be replaced. It's just that Garmin doesn't want us to do it! icon_mad.gif
