Guest bubba232
I have a Gar. III+ and would like to scan some of my topo's. I am curious to see what software others are using. I've heard of OziExplorer and Fugawi. To pay $75 and $95 for a "shareware" style program seems a little high! What are some thoughts. Steve Ps. Does the Mapsource software import scanned topos? Guest Mike_Teague
why bother scanning them yourself? You can download most (if not all) USGS topos for free from http://www.gisdatadepot.com/catalog/US/index.html As for what software to use, Oziexplorer will use em.. I just use a free USGS viewer (called DLGV32) .. doesn't have GPS functions but it's free, and it works good enough for browsin' and grabbing coords if necessary! Quote Link to comment
Guest fairbank
Try GarTrip. It's free to use as is (limited to 35 waypoints and 1 route) and to register for unlimited waypoints and routes I believe it's $35 There's a link to it on my Topo map help page; http://www.geocities.com/fairbank56 Eric Quote Link to comment
Guest Digger
Try GPS Utility - download from www.gpsu.co.uk - It works well with Garmin & Magellan....check out the thread on GPS software to see what people thing. Quote Link to comment
Guest AB
Map source cannot use scanned topo maps. I have it and find it of little use. Fugawi, although does the job, is not nearly as good as Ozi Explorer which is in the same price range. Ozi Explorer is a quality and reliable peace of software. It's worth every penny. Toura Tech QV (used to be called Quo Vadis) is actually the best bitmapped maps navigation software out there. It's the one I use. More feature than Ozi including a multi section user defined database for storing any number of waypoints, routes, tracks and drawings (A very useful feature but will take some time to explain). You can also get it with the Geographic Names Database. It's a list of waypoints of all landmarks in the world. http://www.ttqv.com Hope this helps A.B. Quote Link to comment
Guest GeoTech
I find that GPS TrackMaker (www.gpstm.com) does everything I need: manage waypoints, routes and tracks, upload and download to my GPS & import and calibrate scanned maps. Quote Link to comment
Guest leaper64
i've also been using trackmaker. it seems to be a good way to save and edit waypoints Quote Link to comment
