Solar charger

I was looking for a solar charger and found at Home Depot a Malibu solar garden light by Intermatic which I converted into a lightweight charger by removing the top of the unit. It includes two rechargeable AA batteries in the top compartment. I disconnected the LED board.

I velcroed the unit to my baseball cap, backpack or left it on my dashboard.

The unit cost $19 but you may want to look at their desktop version which they called solar candle.

1 day later:

I disassembled the unit and realize that the cells are only 3mm thick on a solid substrate. I resoldered the diode of the LED board (seems to be only component you need and the pos and neg wires of course) on the substrate. Extend the pos/neg wires to a connector for the GPS and and velcroed the thing on top of an old San Diego Chargers baseball cap. Yes pun intended. LOL.

Note: Leave soldering to an experienced electronic tech
