+Insp Gadget
I'm starting to look for a new GPS for my car use only. Since I'm driving about 7000km permonth, it seems only normal to have a good GPS in my vehicle. I'm looking for a unit that will do turn by turn directions with lots of detail on the maps, especially POI's. I realize the 2 models I am looking at (Garmin's Streetpilot 2610 & Magellan's Road Mate 700) are new to the market, but from the little r5eading I can find on them there seems to be little difference between the 2. Mind you the RM 700 is more than $500 than the 2160, but foir the life of my I can't figure out why the big price difference. Also it seems the 700 has a hard drive built into it, which kind of make me wary. Anyone have any experience with either of these models and can help me make a decision on these? +phantom4099
It would seem that the magellan unit has more detailed maps (requiring 4 cds if you buy the 500, and the 700 comes with a 10 gb hard drive, the 2610 only takes 1.44gb to fit all the street maps). +Insp Gadget
I downloaded a spec sheet on the 2610 from the Garmin site. It says the accuracy of this model is only 15 meters (49 feet). Does this not seem a bit backwards when some of the smallest handhelds can be as accurate as 2meters? Quote Link to comment
+dcfox
I have just recently purchased the 2610. I get about 17 feet at home in open areas(Lancaster PA) . I just got back from a two hour trip to my parents cabin in rural Pa. One of the least populated Counties in Pa. and I must say the City Nav version 5 was very accurate even there. There were som very back roads cut off in the middle but I think this was done for route navigation. In the wooded areas the accuracy dropped a bit to anywhere from 20-30 feet.(leaves about down there). Having had the Garmin GPSV the 2610 is so much easier to see and a lot easier to use. I do still need my V or sell it and get a handheld unit for geocaching or hiking as the 2610 is just for driving. Also, The City Navigator CD is the most accurate map I have seen for my area, finally the roads that do not exist for developments that never went in area gone and the roads in new developments that went in about a year ago are in it.
