New Garmin updates

Well, I went in and did the newest update 3.50 to my Map76. Took it out and fired it up outside and things just did not look right! The street in front of my place was not in the right place. My ''Home'' waypoint checked out right (in the front yard) but the street was too far away! Humm! So I went in and re-installed my mapset thinking that the two programs had to re-jive. Went back out and drove down to the middle of town. All seemed dead on. But when I got back to my front yard the street was still too far away. Not quite in the right place. I went in and checked the coordinates of where the street is on the computer, ok, then went with those coordinates outside and the coordinates in my gps jived with map program in the computer, but the street was still in the wrong place! I've come to the conclusion that the mapping program has my street wrong. So how come I never noticed that the street was off before the update???

Gee, you think I would have noticed that before. Here I was all freaked out that the update had messed up my system! I'm still going to keep an eye on it for a while. icon_confused.gif

I hate to tell you this, but your street secretly moved without telling you about it. Rumor has it that streets all over the US have been secretly moving to confuse and dumbfound those that own/use GPSRs...not to worry though, they will eventually move back just when you think you have it all figured out. icon_biggrin.gif

First off, don't ever trust the 76's basemaps. One of my first caches I found showed me on the other side of the street, on the other side of the train tracks which crossed it from where I actually was.

Secondly, the map data is often wrong.

My personal address shows on pretty much every map system out there as being on the other end of the block.

Repeat after me:

THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY

THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY

THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY

If it WERE the territory, it wouldn't be a map.

Yes, I checked back on my previous track logs and the local roads are off in metroguide. When driving the street, 'lock on roads' kicks in, but when walking it will not, thereby showing the map error.

All is well, just that the map is a bit off on my residential road.

My Etrex Vista has always been that way. I will make a Waypoint and on the screen I should have a Waypoint on the North Side of a River, it will show it on the south side. If I do an aerial map it shows up on the North side like it is suppose to be. I think the overlay of the maps is what is off? Just me thinking some here. This was even with version 3.20.
