well, and this is only my opinion (i'm sure I'll probably be gunned down with conflicting views by GPS experts), but I have Garmin eTrex, which I bought from www.gpsw.co.uk It's about £100. It's been an ideal starter GPS for myself. I've never wished that it did something that any of the others offer.........yet.

I agree.. any of the Etrex range will do for geocaching, after that it's up to personal choice and funding.

But JasonW will swear by his Magellan icon_smile.gif

You can get Garmin 12 for under a hundred from www.gpsw.co.uk and is the one I cut my teeth on.

Moss de Boss.. He de man.. sorta

CANDYCANE.

Take notice of the experts by all means.

But from a novice go for the e-Trex (basic).

It will do all you want for now.

If you have relatives or friends in the US then get them to buy one for you and ship it over. I bought my Garmin eTrex for $79, (UK price ~£100), from Fry's.......

Now, this is my own personal opinion, in order of cost:

Garmin eTrex (Yellow)

Magellan 315

Meridian Gold (preferred over the 315)

Garmin eTrex Legend

Garmin V (preferred over all if you have the money for it)

I am very impressed by my Garmin Vista having graduated from an old GPS45. Like the gentleman says, it depends on what you want to spend and you gets what you pays for. I also had very good service from www.gpsw.co.uk.

Good luck!

I don't think you can go wrong with any Garmin. I have a Garmin 12, it is nearly as cheap and it does a great job and perhaps holds a signal better than an Etrex, and is very rugged as it has survived dropping off the top of my car going 35mph without a scratch, but it is an older unit. I would like to try out a Legend or 76 just to play with the newer features, like WAAS, or the tide tables on the 76.

The best units for reception seem to be the new Garmin V, the garmin IIIplus, and the Garmin 76. None of those are very cheap.

I'm not sure WAAS is much use here in the UK, but presumably it does help over in the Americas.

(Oh, by the way, your image comes through broken at this end...)
