Coordinate offsets?

Hey all, I've just started with geocaching recently and have come across a couple of mystery caches that require you to apply an offset to find the final location, eg. S-345 E+123.

Could someone explain how to do this please, because nothing I've tried seems right and Google hasn't helped...

I would imagine you'd start with the published coordinates and then subtract 345 from the decimal part of the minutes south and add 123 to the decimal part of the minutes east.

And when you're doing this type of math, it's worth understanding that the minutes part is minutes: the numbers go from 0.000 to 59.999. So if you have N40 59.999 and are told to add +1 to latitude, you get N41 0.000.
