+Bazzerbeeza
We visit our son twice a year in Massachussetts, USA and, of course take our grandson caching. I have a Montana 600 and I guess Garmin could fix me up with a superdooper/expensive map but I would like to know of any alternative mapping suitable for caching in USA. Thanks. Quote Link to comment

team tisri
I use the openstreetmap maps for the east coast when I visit. They are good for roads, cover at least some major trails but lack contours. I've got a bunch of track logs of smaller trails I hiked and at some point plan to upload them to OSM. In very hilly areas the lack of contour information is a major negative. If you're going twice a year then the "expensive" map might not seem so expensive after you've been using it for several trips. If I visited that frequently I'd seriously consider buying the 1:24000 maps - if you buy it from Garmin USA I think it's about $90, which is pretty trivial compared to the cost of plane tickets. +wrightexplorers
Or you could try here. I can recommend these. We used them this summer when we were in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The maps are routable as well, so you can use your GPS as a sat nav if you want to. Quote Link to comment
+Bazzerbeeza
Thanks for your replies and I decided to use Openstreetmap but as a thickie I have been unsuccessful and would welcome some guidance. I chose some tiles in Massachusssets and did my submission getting several files in return. As I dont have Basecamp or Mapsource or a Mac I chose osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip, unzipped it and put the resulting gmapsupp.img file onto the SD card of my Montana into the Garmin folder. I then disabled the other maps and can see Enabled - OSM generic routable but still cannot see the map (I am presently in USA) when I select a cache. I have also put the file into Custommaps but still no joy. What am I missing? All help most welcome. Quote Link to comment
+redsox_mark
It sounds like you are doing everything correctly. I use these maps when in the USA http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/latest/ If you have a large enough card the 4 GB version covers all of the USA. Quote Link to comment
+Bazzerbeeza
Thanks for your swift reply. I will gladly buy a 4Gb card if I can get all USA on it. As a technothickie I would be grateful if you would spell out for me the process I should follow. Thanks again. Quote Link to comment
+redsox_mark
I don't have a Montana, but I know that you can install multiple map files (.img) files in the Garmin directory. Once it is there via the menu you should be able to configure what maps are active and their priority. Hopefully a Montana user can tell you the exact steps. Quote Link to comment
+Bazzerbeeza
Mission accomplished and used for some caching today, once I had clicked on to using Google Chrome everything fell into place. I look forward to using this map for all my US trips so a big thank you for your assistance. Quote Link to comment
