+Chicken Feathers
I am able to enter PQ and have it delivered to my email. Where I am having trouble is unzipping it and also would like to know how to download it to my GPS I am using windows 8 and have unzip that came with computer. Do I really need to use winzip? Since I am not computer literate I would like all steps listed if this is not asking to much. Thanks for any help Quote Link to comment
+kd0bik
Like most things, there's more than one way to accomplish this. I use GSAK http://www.gsak.net/ You'll need to do some reading, but the tutorials are well written. Jerry Quote Link to comment
+NeverSummer
Generally you can just double click on the zip file and it will open. This may mean right-clicking on a PC and selecting the program to open with. Most modern computers come with a program to unzip files. From there, you need some program to "speak" to your GPS if you are trying to load the query on it. That can be Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK) for PC, or GPSBabel which I use on my Mac. There are other waypoint management programs which can help, too, but I'm not familiar with them. Garmin has its "Waypoint Manager" software, available via their website. So, right click on the file. Open it with WinZip. It should unzip the file and create a new folder with the same (or similar) name. You can then use a program of your choosing to load them on your computer. GSAK would be a good way to go, as it can do this task...and many, many others as you get used to using it. Good luck. I hope this helps... Quote Link to comment
the3gmen
What kind of gps do you have ? Loading it to your gps can vary depending on which one you have. Quote Link to comment
+DonB
The easiest software to use for loading into the GPS without a complicated learning curve is EasyGPS. It's free and very easy to use. Quote Link to comment
+Graculus
You don't need either GSAK or EasyGPS. They are great programs and do wonderful things but you really need to know how to use them. The PQ can be unzipped and transferred directly to your GPS just with Windows. I've written a simple to use document on how to do this. There are two documents, one for Garmin and one for Magellan as you've not said what GPS you are using. If you are actually using a smart phone with the geocaching.com apps then you don't need your PC at all as you can just connect to your account using the phone and download the PQ that way. Click here for my resource site page on paperless caching - scroll to the bottom for the docs. +dprovan
I am using windows 8 and have unzip that came with computer. Do I really need to use winzip? I would go so far as to say you shouldn't use winzip for anything, since zip files are supported natively on Windows 8. winzip will just make things more difficult. Quote Link to comment
