Ham Radio and Geocaching - Fun and Tarining in One!

Recommended Posts

Listed below is our first joint ham radio and geocaching event. If you are involved in ARES or RACES emergency work, using a GPS unit is an expected part of your training experience. We hope that this geocaching event will help make that training more fun. We look forward to seeing more ham radio organizations across the world, getting in on the fun.

COME JOIN THE FUN! You're cordially invited to A geocaching and ham radio picnic / Bar-B-Que

On September 7, 2002 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the Northern Nevada Amateur Radio Services (NNARS) group will be sponsoring its first GeoCaching event at the Davis Creek Campground near Reno, NV. Ham radio operators, geocachers and the general public are all welcome. If you do not have a GPS unit do not worry, we will partner those who have GPS units with those who don't. There will be a number of cache boxes hidden at the park. The goal is to find as many of these caches as possible. From each cache you will take a ticket which will be put into a drawing at the end of the day. Hundreds of dollars worth of free prizes will be given away and everyone will have an equal chance to win. Some of the prizes include a Meridian Gold GPS hand-held receiver, ham radio stuff, 3D Topo. maps, energy conservation products, tee-shirts,coffee mugs and more!

Directions: 39.18.135N 119.50.008W

For those without a GPS unit; At the intersection of HWY 80 and HWY 395 in Reno, NV take HWY 395 south for 19.3 mi, turn RIGHT (West) onto SR-429 for 0.4 mi, then turn RIGHT (West) onto Davis Creek Camp Grd Rd for 120 yds, then turn LEFT (South) onto Local road(s) for 32 yds. Driving time estimated at 30 minutes.

Picnic / Bar-B-Que: At the group event area there are many Bar-B-Que pits and picnic tables, so bring a picnic lunch and something to Bar-B-Que. You will need to bring all of your own cooking supplies, except for charcoal, which will be supplied.

Weather: According to Park Rangers, this is the most beautiful time of year at the park. Temperatures should be in the 70's to 80's, and the area is covered with trees so there is ample shade. Due to ever changing Nevada weather, it would be wise to prepare for cooler weather, just in case.

Please RSVP: To reserve your place please contact Rick Klimovich (w7toc@sbcglobal.net) by August 30. It will be greatly appreciated as it will help us coordinate parking and provide enough cache tickets for the giveaway.

Event Frequency: 147.420 Simplex

Special Thanks To: All of the generous sponsors (www.magellangps.com/en/, www.garmin.com, www.offroute.com, www.yaesu.com, www.enerchron.com, to name a few) who have donated the prizes for our giveaway, and the Washoe County Office of Emergency Management whose support we so greatly appreciate.
