jnlaustin
I just got Garmin Oregon 450t and the map location shows me being about 300 feet off. I've let it sit outside for over an hour to acquire a fix and it says the sensitivity is within 15 feet. I've driven around for 30 minutes and it's still off. What can I do to get it correct? +Gitchee-Gummee
You probably should set it to WGS-84 and HDD(D)° MM.MMM Datum and Format. This is usually the case when somebody's unit is consistently "off". BUT... if the error is only in mapping, then it is quite possibly the map, especially when zoomed in tight. Not all that uncommon, although 300' is quite a bit. Edited February 4, 2013 by Gitchee-Gummee Quote Link to comment
alandb
The 100K topo maps that come with the Oregon T models can be off by that much. Install another map (Open Street Maps or a map from GPSFileDepot) and see if you still get the same position errors. Quote Link to comment
jnlaustin
Its already on those settings. Any other ideas? My older GPS and even my phone is way closer than this. Quote Link to comment

Just to be clear on this... Are you judging this based solely upon what you see on the map, or are you actually trying to find coordinates? You say the datum and format are correct, then that leaves the mapping (and/or routing, as TC mentions). I am guessing that you are using to drive about with (that's what you have mentioned), but the question still comes up whether or not it will deliver you, within reason, to a spot via use of coordinates. THAT is where the accuracy of the unit comes into play! You should also make sure that it is not set for driving (routing). Sometimes, maps leave a bit to be desired and usually have little, if any, relation as to whether the unit is accurate or not. If you want a TRUE accuracy test, load up coordinates for a benchmark (one that is established to be there) and go find it. It don't get no better than that! jnlaustin
Thank you. You guys were right. I was looking at the map with roads, etc and it showed me being off, but when I put the coordinates into Google Earth, it had me spot on. Quote Link to comment
alandb
I had the same experience with my Oregon 550T. I replaced the pre-installed Garmin 100K Topo with Open Street Map USA, and now the map locations are very accurate. Quote Link to comment
jnlaustin
I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the advice. This is a very helpful forum. I like it here. Quote Link to comment
