geocache software

You actually need very little to start caching. Load the basic coordinates into your unit and you are good to go. Many of us started out with only this. However, in addition to mapping (mentioned in the post above), there is a lot of information about caches that is useful when you are searching -- the cache description, hints, recent logs, and the like. Groundspeak puts this information into certain files (.gpx) that can be transferred to your handheld unit. However, to take advantage of this, you need to become a premium member.

If you think this game is something that you want to do, premium membership would allow your unit to better work to its full capabilities. In addition to information about single caches, it allows you to create pocket queries that contain the basic "paperless" cache information for up to 1000 caches at a time.

That leads into other kinds of software, such as managers that allow you to keep track of pocket queries, edit them, and upload them into the unit. GSAK is a popular caching software for use with windows computers, however, I would classify it more as nagware than freeware.

I just bought a garmin etrex 20 for multiple reasons one of them to start geocaching with the family which we are complete newbies. What would be the best freeware for geocaching with that model gps???

thanks in advance

Hard to recommend software not knowing what computer OS you're running but GARMIN BaseCamp is cross platform and will work with your eTrex20 and Groundspeak Geocache files as well as manage waypoints, routes, tracks, adventures, geotag photos, update your firmware, manage maps and overlays, plus some other things.

Also helps if you say where in the world you are.

Geocaching, and the forums, are worldwide...

There may be local groups and websites that may be more relevant.

Welcome! :D
