Open Street Maps in Car GPS

Just got a new 2012 Nissan rogue with the built in GPS system. No,I'm not planning to use it for geocaching. No, I didn't purchase it on purpose, it was part of an option package. The Maps are navteq and they are very sparse. I was wondering if anybody has had success in making thias particular GPS unit read and navigate using Openstreet maps. The system uses an SD card to store the map data.

Navteq (data provider) won't be the issue for your satnav. The issue will be who makes the hardware (do you know?), and has anybody reverse engineered a compiler for that hardware. Garmin has a lot of units so it's a good subject for compiler reverse engineering. If you can hook it up to a PC, and it's a Garmin product you may have a chance, but if the thing's in your dashboard, it will likely have some funky installer requirements, like read from DVD. So you'd need to figure that out as well. My guess would be the odds of bricking your satnav would be pretty good if you improvise, but let us know if you find something.

I have verified that the maps are located on the SD card, by removing it before I turn the satnav on. The card contains several levels of folders with file types that are not familiar to me, so I assume it is not Garmin hardware. I have been unable to learn who makes the hardware. Looking through the Nissan website, there seems to be many different styles of head end unit offered that includes satnav functions. I assume there is a manufacturer that purchases an XM radio module, a satnav module, a radio module and a camera module and integrates them all into a single head end unit that they resell to Nissan. Even if I were to learn who supplied the head end unit, there is no guarantee they actually made the satnav portion. Any thoughts pn where to look? Most of the openstreetmap resources lean toward the map making end, not the receiving hardware end. And just to clarify: I am looking for a safe, legal option similar to those available for my Garmin handheld GPS. I'm not interested in hacks, cracks or other illegal/unethical/shady practices.
