Help with Sendmap20 and GPSmap 60c

Hi, hoping someone can give me some advice before i throw both this laptop AND my gps under the nearest moving vehicle!!!

Been caching since April using my HTC phone, which i have found to be really good other then i need to take around 6 spare batteries with me for an afternoon caching, so i decided to purchase a 'proper' gps thinking this will be more accurate and save in batteries.

I did some research, obviously not enough, because i ended up buying a Garmin GPSmap 60c. I thought i'd checked that this model did paperless caching, but have since found out it doesn't really because you can only download the co-ords and the name :s , so this was my first mistake.

Anyway. i downloaded a cache to the garmin and my phone and off i went to try to find it. I am dissapointed to say that the phone was much more accurate then the garmin, one showing 3 meters accuracy whilst the other showing 30ft and both the compasses pointing in different direction! :(

But i thought i'd at least give the garmin a second chance and perhaps download a few to do one evening, so on the advice of a friend was recommended to download the opensource uk map. Which is what i have been trying to do for the last 3 hours

Not really sure what i am doing, but have followed all the instructions i could find, here's what i have done....

Downloaded and installed the garmin usb driver - control panel now show Garmin USB GPS v2.3.1.0

Downloaded, unzipped and saved the map GMAPSUPP.img

Downloaded sendmap20

Opened up sendmap20

select Add Maps

browse to the saved GMAPSUPP.img which then shows lots of files in the 'maps to upload' window named UK Mapset Without Contours OSM-tile: xxxxxxxx (where xxxx is a different number for each file)

Press Connect this correctly shows my gps 'GPSMap60C Software version 4.20

press Upload maps to GPS opens a dos box that shows Sendmap20 pro rev 6.7

Trying:usb

another blank message box showing Sending maps

and thats it!!

Sorry it's abit longwinded but am i doing something wrong??

Tried creating a shortcut, changing the target to include -h but all i see is a dos prompt box flash up then dissappear, but the program doesn't start up

Any help would be appreciatted :)

Hope you didn't pay much for that 60c. It's been out of production for about 6 years, and now its highly regarded successor, the 60csx is out of production. If you have a gmapsupp.img and you can see your device as a drive in your computer, you should be able to just copy the gmapsupp.img to the \Garmin folder on the 60c. (Or at least you can with a 60csx, my hardware doesn't go as far back as the 60c). Sendmap 2.0 is used to send individual IMG files. A gmapsupp.img is a collection of IMG files. Where did you get the gmapsupp.img from? I don't know if BaseCamp supports devices that old, but if it does, you'd be better off downloading maps from a site like garmin.openstreetmap.nl that provides an installer for the mapsets. Then you can see the maps in BaseCamp and send them to your GPSr from BaseCamp's MapInstall app.

Thanks for the reply

Didn't really pay much for it, don't think i paid over the odds, but it was as much as i could afford to spend on a gps!

Unfortunatly i can't see the device as a drive. I got the map from talkytoaster and downloaded the recommended sendmap.

Still no luck with it as yet so will have a look at the garmin.openstreetmap.nl

Thanks

Thought i'd come back just to say thanks i now have a map on my GPSmap 60c!

I downloaded Basecamp and then downloaded the maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl as you suggested and somehow managed to get the map onto the GPS, although it does now seem a tad slow, but i assume thats expected?

Now time to load some caches on and hopefully get outside.

(remembering of course to take my phone for description and hints!
