Mac Garmin Help

Can someone please help? I have been trying to find solutions by reading and reading, but just can't seem to get the whole picture.

This is what I see on Geocaching Software page available for Mac users.

 

Mac Applications

 

Routebuddy (GPX/LOC) - Mac desktop application - combines plug-and-play GPS support with high-quality map data, allowing creation of a library of your GPS activities.

 

Google Earth (GPX/KML) - Google Earth can overlay the travels of trackable items on geocaching.com. Google Earth also uses GPS Babel to allow Premium Members the ability to drag a Pocket Query GPX file on to the application to overlay geocaches.

 

GPSBabel (GPS/LOC/KML) - A free console-based application for converting LOC and GPX to various other formats. Source code available.

 

GPS Connect for Mac OS X (GPX) - Garmin Specific application that works with GPX.

 

MacCaching GeoCache Manager (GPX/LOC) - A geocache manager for Mac OS X.

 

iCaching (GPX) is a Mac application for organizing your GPX files

 

I am currently running:

OS X 10.7.4 MacBookPro

760 Nuvi

3.3.2 BaseCamp For Mac - Garmin

2.2.1 POI Loader for Mac - Garmin

4.0.3 Communicator Plugin for Mac - Garmin

2.1.3 Web Updater - Garmin

and Premium Geocaching Membership

 

Am I missing anything? Do I need all the above with a Premium Geocaching Membership?

 

I have done the PQ, opened w/ BaseCamp.

When I go to

On My Computer

MyCollection

Click on the "10 caches" I downloaded

The 10 caches then appear lower in the column. I then use the

Drop Down Menu (Gear) and

select View Detailed Data list.

 

Then a window "Data in 10 caches" pops up.

The 1st Tab is Waypoints and the page is blank at that point,

When I select the 4th tab, Geocaches, I see the whole list, in its entirety, from my pocket query with all the details.

Symbol = chest

Code = GCXXXX

Name = cache name

Type = Traditional etc.

Size = small, micro etc

Difficulty = 1.0, 1.5 etc

Terrain = 1.0, 1.5 etc

Awesomeness = (blank)

Your Status = Unattempted

Position = Coordinates

Placed by = name of cache owner

Placed on = mm/dd/yy

Location = United States

 

Under BaseCamp preferences, general tab, settings are:

Measurement Unit = US

Heading = True

Postion Format = Lat/Lon hdddºmm,mmm'

Datum = WGS84

 

What I am seeking to do is have all the details that I mentioned that are under that 4th tab, Geocaches, transferred over to my gps.

However, all that transfers via my usb cable, in Favorites of Nuvi760, is GCXXXX. The coordinates are in there and you can hit go and it will take you there, but can't view any details.

 

Please, I know I have read about macs on this site, but I haven't been able to find the answer to this question.

You do not need ANY of that software to accomplish what you desire.

 

Simply download the zipped PQ from your premium Groundspeak account, unarchive the zip file, and copy the resulting *.gpx files to your Garmin GPS:\GPX\ directory. If you have older geocache *.gpx files still in that directory, you may need to remove them to make room for the new file.

 

Uh, wait a second... You are using a Nuvi 760?

 

If so, the information you are getting is all the nuvi 760 is capable of displaying (760 specs). You will need to get a "paperless geocaching" capable GPSr for more info to display.

It will list the device as "Geocaching Friendly".

Interesting - that list leaves out the eTrex 10 even though it also supports paperless caching.

Ok, so if I did buy a new gps that supports paperless caching, and I have a Mac OS X 10.7.4, I would not need base camp or anything else, just my premium membership and the PQ details would go to the gps?

Yes!

 

You can simply copy the *.gpx files from your unarchived Groundspeak PQ directly to your \Garmin\GPX\ directory and you are ready to cache (with all the available information)!

You can simply copy the *.gpx files from your unarchived Groundspeak PQ directly to your \Garmin\GPX\ directory and you are ready to cache (with all the available information)!

 

Ok. I am looking at the Garmin Dakota 20. It is wireless. Is this a good choice if I have a Mac? Does wireless mean you won't use a cable to hook to computer?

I am in NE Ohio. Do chain stores sell these reasonably?

The "wireless" feature of the Dakota 20 is for transferring data from things like heart rate monitors, bike computers, swapping data between other units. You'll still need to plug it into your computer to copy your pocket queries or other GPX files to/from the GPS.

 

"Chain stores" - if you mean physical, brick and mortar locations - vary widely but usually can't compete on price alone. Great way to get some hands-on sense of the equipment though. You'll find several opinions in these forums about which chain stores people like best (REI, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc.) but the focus there will be customer service, opportunity to handle the merchandise before buying, stuff like that.

I would stay away from the Dakota, and grab an Oregon instead. I have each, and the Oregon is far more durable, and more mature with software. Oregon 450 or 550 if you want the camera. "t" models add 100K USA Topo maps.
