June 4 Begin Geocaching in New York and Pennsylvania on National Trails Day

Sackets Harbor, NY - June 4th is National Trails Day. Promoters of the 518-mile National Scenic Byway that parallels the freshwater shoreline of New York and Pennsylvania want you to “Get up! Get outside! Enjoy the great outdoors!” by geocaching along the 75-cache Great Lakes Seaway Trail. The 518-mile byway for leisure driving and great vacations parallels the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Lake Erie in NY and PA.

A new supply of Great Lakes Seaway Trail GeoTrail logbooks and GeoCoins is available for 2011. Each of five regions of the byway has 15 caches awaiting discovery.

The Western New York region includes 13 caches in New York Congressman Brian Higgins’ 27th District encompassing two-thirds of the City of Buffalo, eastern and southern Erie County, and all of Chautauqua County to the NY-PA line.

Congressman Higgins, a Great Lakes Task Force member, says, “National Trails Day is a great prompt to get out and explore the waterfront in a new and fun way. Geocaching along the Great Lakes Seaway Trail offers family-friendly adventures along the naturally beautiful landscapes of this National Scenic Byway not only here in Western New York but throughout New York’s Great Lakes coastal region.”

“Great Lakes Seaway Trail geocachers can each collect five different coins featuring iconic sites along the byway. Participants seem to love the GeoCoins. They are a well-earned reward and souvenir for this fun and exciting adventure,” says Great Lakes Seaway Trail Director of Business Relations Kurt Schumacher.

The GeoCoins feature the St. Lawrence Seaway, historic Fort Ontario, Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse, Niagara Falls and the Maid of the Mist, and the Flagship Niagara.

Texas Parks and Wildlife is expanding their challenge:

Texas State Parks Geocache Challenge!

Texas State Parks Statewide Geocache Challenge

We invite you and your family to join us in discovering hidden items while revealing exciting facts and stories about Texas State Parks. All you'll need is a handheld GPSr (Global Positioning Satellite receiver), the coordinates for the hidden treasure (or cache), and a Texas State Park Geocache Challenge Passport Book available here and at local parks after June 25th, when the challenge officially starts.

We have hidden a special geocache in many state parks, historic sites, and natural areas for you to find. The state will be broken up into seven different regions (see map below) and a different prize will be available in each region. In each cache, you will find a logbook that explains a unique story about each park. Within this story you will find the answer to a question on your Geocache Challenge Passport. Also, there will be a special orienteering punch that you will use to mark your Passport Book to claim the cache, and a logbook to sign. You may also want to log your find on www.geocaching.com

In addition, each cache should contain unique outdoor themed trading cards for children that are specific to each park. You will also find other tradable items left by cachers who have visited the site. Remember if you do take a tradable item; leave something behind of equal value to be picked up by others who arrive after you. The trading cards are meant to be collected by young cachers to complete the set with no trade required. A total of 90 unique cards are available, a different card should be found in each cache.
