JosBel
Yesterday, my geocacher Girlfriend (Fuu) and I, searched a cache (Renacuajo.Qro [GCKW40]). We found the exact place, but it was empty, no stones, no container, nothing. We think that we were in the wrong place. We searched and searched a long time. ¿We got lucky? I don't know, we found the container, and the stones which were hidding the cache. Everything it was destroyed, looks like the stones fall, and destroyed everything, including the container. So, whats is this?? We found it?? We didn't find it?? We don't know what to log, also, i think that the owner doesn't continue being a geocacher anymore, i think that maybe we can adopt the cache if i am right, but, i want to know, if we log like "I Found it", or "I didn't find it" or what. Also, if we can adopt, even if the original owner isn't a geocacher at this time. Quote Link to comment

I would send the cache owner an email, asking if he is still maintaining the cache, and as long as you signed the log, and he is still maintaining the cache, you ought to be able to log the find. If he isn't maintaining the cache, he has to transfer the ownership to you for you to be able to adopt it. If he doesn't respond, and you signed the log, I'd say log the find. Quote Link to comment

Your best option would be to first post a needs maintenance log, which should reach the owner if he is still caring about such things, wait a few weeks for any activity from the owner, then perhaps post a Needs Archived log which will notify the reviewer. It happens. Caches go missing, cache owners go missing. Should you claim a find or claim a DNF? In my opinion, it does sound like you found the cache, even if you didn't find the log. It is really up to you how you wish to deal with that. Quote Link to comment

Thanks, mi GF already send an email to the owner. We are waiting a response of him. You would need to have the cache owner's permission to adopt it. Yes, we have pictures, even we have pieces of the container, and we are sure of that not only by pictures, also it has written data of the cache, like the name, and the webpage, and other things. +The VanDucks
We had a similar thing happen to us; we went to find a cache and saw pieces of it in a creek nearby. Obviously, it had been muggled between the previous finder and our visit. We sent an email to the owner telling him what we found. It didn't occur to us to log it as found, because it wasn't exactly "there" anymore (and the logbook had washed away)! If you get a e-mail back from the cache owner saying you can log it as found, do so. Otherwise, if you log a "find" it may cause other cachers to go looking for the cache which is no longer there. As stated above, you can't just adopt a cache without going through the required process. You can't assume a cacher is no longer active in the sport unless he tells you so, since he may just be busy with other activities in his life. I suggest you put a "watch" on the cache so if it does get archived by the reviewer, you'll have a chance to try to place another cache there in the future. Quote Link to comment
+wimseyguy
The cache owner has not had much activity in their profile for six years except for a few other hides 2 years ago. I'd be surprised if they respond. As already stated, you cannot adopt it unless they agree. But since this isn't really a cache any more, if they do not reply, you can post a Needs Archived log. The reviewer will take appropriate actions, and if it is archived, you can place a cache of your own here if you want to. Based on the photographic evidence I would call this a find. They used a cheap plastic container, which isn't a good choice for a cache. But it's lasted for a while there; I wonder if it is a dry area? I understand the guidelines state to sign the log, but sometimes it is completely obvious that the log isn't available to sign, but the cache was found. Quote Link to comment
