TillaMurphs
I would like to find the current azimuth for a direction that was 262 degrees magnetic (“S 82 DEG W”) in 1883. (Reference RD1866) This is at location N45.171667 W123.957064 or N 45 10.300 W 123 57.424 (or current zip code 97135) I usually use the NOAA online calculator, but it only goes back to 1900. I was just curious if there was a tool to convert this 1883 measurement to something I can measure today? Thanks Quote Link to comment
+LSUFan
Tillamurphs, I saw this on the NOAA website. Maybe it can help some. U.S. Historic Declination calculator. This calculator uses the US declination models to compute declination only for the conterminous US from 1750 - present. Due to differences in data availability (recorded observations of the magnetic field), the western part of the US may not have values until the early 1800's. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomagmodels/USHistoric.jsp Quote Link to comment
TillaMurphs
LSUFan, THANKS! That is exactly what I needed - I now have my 1883 declination value. If I ever get back down to Monroe/Ruston/Hodge on another business trip I will buy you a drink of your favorite beverage. However, unrelated to the declination, now I wonder if the call in the description is backwards. The description says: (Station is) ON THE ROCKY BEACH NEARLY AT THE EXTREME HIGH-WATER LINE ABOUT 7 METERS FROM THE FOOT OF A HIGH GREEN BLUFF. THERE IS A CEDAR STAKE AT THE FOOT OF THE CLIFF DISTANT 7.47 METERS S 82 DEG W, MAGNETIC. By my reckoning, that means there was a stake at 262° MAGNETIC in 1883 – or 283° true. Since this mark is on a beach with a bluff to the east and the bay directly to the west, that would put the stake (and the “FOOT OF THE CLIFF”) in the water. So, either I am incorrectly interpreting “S 82 DEG W, MAGNETIC” or the description ended up 180 degrees off. Quote Link to comment
kayakbird
Looks like some one was real busy doing table exercise BOGUS DESTROYED logging (31) on 20 JUN 2009. At least on this one he decided that the cedar stake reference mark was destroyed. Just hope that he does not do NGS recoveries! kayakbird Quote Link to comment

Our goal is to find one that he has marked as destroyed so we can stick out our tongues and say: "nyah nyah nyah". No wait. We are too mature for that. Forget I said that last part. Bill93
Reply moved to the "Bogus Logs" thread so this thread can be about mag bearings and the specific mark. Edited September 3, 2010 by Bill93 Quote Link to comment
