+Possum Posse
If this question's been asked before, my apologies. In my benchmark hunts, I have found witness posts on 2 occasions but not marks. Where are they? Thanks for any help. +Kewaneh & Shark
Witness posts are not always directly adjacent to the benchmarks. Ideally, they would be placed next to the mark, but it may not always be the best place for the post itself. For example, a mark near a road, or in a road surface might get its witness post set up on a nearby fence so it doesn't get hit (and destroyed) by a car. It could also be that you found a witness post set for another surveying mark other than a benchmark. Many times, surveyors set witness posts for property corners, traverse points, survey control and GPS points, etc. You may have found something like that and just not known it. Keep on Caching! Z15
There should be information in the description as to where the mark is located in reference to the witness post. Also it could be buried or as mentioned some distance away. I have seen them and set them as much as 50+ ft from the mark. Many times circumstances dictate this be done. One I recall had the witness post over 100 ft away, it was near an airport boundary where they mowed the grass weekly and the post was put at the fence line. Without the witness post, you would search all day and not be able to location the site as the fence was the only object within sight and the mark was hard to find even with the WP. +1setter
Here's an example of one over a hundred feet from of the post. Of course when I was looking, I didn't have the description with me. 111 ft from the post. Quote Link to comment
