+Uplink Posted August 3, 2002 Posted August 3, 2002 Interesting article here about the grief being caused by the increasing availability of inexpensive GPS surveying. http://www.msnbc.com/news/789040.asp?0dm=T18KT Aparently some jurisdictions used rocks, trees, and river junctions for benchmarks, and some folks who thought they lived in one state or county actually live in a DIFFERENT state or county! survey tech Posted August 3, 2002 Posted August 3, 2002 The article discusses property lines and property corners, not benchmarks, and indicates the fundamental public confusion of land surveying and mapping. Natural objects are used everywhere to mark boundaries, and are considered the best evidence of boundary location in a court of law. Such disputes have always existed. GPS is simply a new way of locating points and cannot change property rights but merely display where markers are on the earth. Quote
