Garminator
I've seen this a hundred times........What does "recovery note" exactly mean? Does it mean that the mark was recovered and retired(meaning, no more!)or it it a way of saying that it was found in it's location? Sorry for the lame question! I've seen recovery notes by NGS and also by LOCENGFIRM (or something like that) Reason I ask this is because I've also seen "Descrition by NGS" usually but not always followed up by a "Recovery note". 10 times out of 10 the structure that mark was originally set is non-existant. Z15
Recoverey note means a report of someone searching for the mark and the condition it was found in, + any new information to help locate the mark in the furure. Everytime someone sends in a credible report it gets updated. Its the history of use etc. It speaks for itself. If you are just looking at datasheets on this site, you will find they are an abbreviated form of the complete document. LOCENGFIRM just means "local engineering firm" found or did not find the mark at that pariticular time. There are 1000's of codes in use describing various agencys, orgs, etc. When the person enters this code, the sybase program knows the tect to add to the database to agent the term "Recovery by Michgian Department of Transporation 2002 (MPR)" see example below The NGS Data SheetSee file dsdata.txt for more information about the datasheet.DATABASE = Sybase ,PROGRAM = datasheet, VERSION = 6.67 1 National Geodetic Survey, Retrieval Date = DECEMBER 7, 2002 SG0178 *********************************************************************** SG0178 DESIGNATION - BUMBLETOWN MIGS 1934 SG0178 PID - SG0178 SG0178 STATE/COUNTY- MI/HOUGHTON SG0178 USGS QUAD - AHMEEK (1980) SG0178 SG0178 *CURRENT SURVEY CONTROL SG0178 ___________________________________________________________________ SG0178* NAD 83(1994)- 47 16 48.14714(N) 088 25 41.44219(W) ADJUSTED SG0178* NAVD 88 - 377. survey tech
The NGS uses the word recovered in the sense that any marker, having been put in place and left to the mercy of fate for some length of time, must be visited and seen to confirm that it has survived. It is not intended to imply that the marker has been removed, although it is understandable that people are often confused by this use of the word recovery. I have never heard of a marker being retired. If the information pertaining to a particular marker is determined to be inaccurate, the coordinates and/or elevation data is adjusted or revised, but the marker is left in place. Garminator
Elcamino and Survey, Thanks for the replies! I used the word "retired" for lack of a better word. Some of my benchmark hunting areas encompass abandoned railway beds, bridges, etc. When I read the description and go to the area, "no bridge" to be found.....and I know from when I was a kid that there used to be one there. On these same "No find" benchmarks, some mention Recovered by NGS, etc. and figured it meant that it was given back, retired(for lack of better terms) to the Coastal and Geodetic dudes. Now, I see that it means that it was only "found" on that date. Thanks, Garminator "I seen Elvis making crop circles"......................Are the Soprano's on yet?
