Western PA CITO Event

Recommended Posts

Filing an EXCELLENT report on the Earth Day Cleanup at Raccoon Creek Park CITO Cache, held today in a state park outside of Pittsburgh.

As the 40 adult and 20 younger geocachers converged on the park, our cars were drenched by a rainstorm. Miraculously, the skies cleared just as we met at 9:00 a.m. to begin the day's work. We split into several groups, guided by park rangers who had scouted out areas of the park that needed work. The largest group walked around the perimeter of 100-acre Raccoon Lake and collected bagful after bagful of trash. A second litter patrol attacked a roadside on the border of the park. A third very hard-working group did trail maintenance on a brand-new trail that will have its grand opening on May 10th.

We then met at a picnic shelter (donated by the park) for a FEAST of a potluck lunch. Meanwhile, The Leprechauns operated the "Geocacher's Supermarket" where ammo cans, CITO T-shirts, and Groundspeak merchandise were sold. There were also informational areas set up for cache hunting gear demonstrations and how to use ClayJar's "Watcher" software. We heard a nice speech from one of the park officials, thanking us for our efforts. Geocaching is now an accepted and encouraged activity in Pennsylvania parks.

After lunch, we hunted three temporary caches and used them to introduce several newcomers to geocaching. (One of the temporary caches had a dozen travel bugs in it!) Veterans then went off to tackle some of the four new physical caches and one virtual cache placed elsewhere in the park.

Piles and piles of trash were collected today. As pictures are posted to the cache log page, I will add them here as well.

THANK YOU, Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio geocachers, for a successful cache-in, trash-out event!

Here is a picture of most of the participants in our CITO Event (minus a few people who couldn't wait, and bolted out right after lunch to hunt for new geocaches placed in the park!)

Thanks to Sherwood Forest, our winner of the long distance award, who kindly agreed to take this first-ever official picture of Western PA geocachers, since he is from Northeast Ohio.
