Does GPSr Free Memory Become Fragmented?

Do you know if the Colorado or Oregon or any other GPSr memory space that appears as a virtual drive partition on the PC ever becomes fragmented? It may be that fragmentation is something that only occurs on physical drives and is not possible in non-volatile memory?

The flash memory on the GPSr will become fragmented, but you don't need to de-fragment it. Why? Because it is not a mechanical device like a hard drive. There is no head that needs to seek data on defragmented blocks. The flash file system easily accounts for dispersed data. No matter where your data is, the read time will be just as fast. You will gain NO performance from defragmenting your GPSr.

 

If you de-fragment you GPSr memory, you will effectively cause thousands of unnecessary erase/write cycles. This will wear down the memory much faster.

 

Don't do it.
