+Epmath2410
I'm not sure if this question has already been asked here i tried to find the answer before posting. I'm kind of a GPS newbie but getting better. We have been using our Legend hcx to Geocache and it is working great but i would like to make the map "better" we normally use the compass mode to find a cache once we are close enough but sometimes getting close enough can be a problem. I want to buy map software for my gps but I'm confused as to which to get . We live in Rhode Island so i would be looking for software for the US or the New England area and i wasn't sure because some are a dvd and some come in a preloaded card which i already have a 2g micro card in my gps? any help would be great and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+MacFlash
The 2008 Topo DVD has all the maps that are divided up on the various area topo SD cards, you can just load what you like on the card you bought yourself. That said, it is not going to help you find the caches. You are better off using the compass page, and perhaps a plain old magnetic compass. I have the 2008 DVD. It has decent contours, certainly not the same detail as a paper map though. The roads on it are both outdated and inaccurately place relative to the topographic features. So if you want some more detail besides the basemap in terms of geographical features on your GPS, by all means get it. Just don't expect x marks the spot on the map is going to tell you were the cache is. You still have the same uncertainty you did before you bought the map. The other mapping possibility is city navigator. The roads are accurate and it has lots of points of interest. You can actually use it to navigate on the road if you like, but of course it doesn't have any topographic information. So if you want turn by turn directions while driving (don't have an automotive GPS) it is the right choice. Quote Link to comment
+Epmath2410
I guess what im looking for is more like a ok load the caches into the gps and software that will show me what streets i can take to get in the area of the cache then switch to the compass mode instead of driving around following the compass and trying to get close that way Quote Link to comment
+MacFlash
Sounds like you want the city navigator maps. You put in the coordinates and it will give you turn by turn directions to as close as you can get. Quote Link to comment
