+bashnme
Is there a correct way to disconnect my XL from my iMac when finished? I get a message that I may have lost data when I just turn the XL off. Quote Link to comment

The 'Activity Monitor' is your friend (Applications> Utilities), watch the viewer when you know data exchange is taking place, watch what it's doing, then observe when things are not happening, compare. When things are quiet unplug and ignore the message, Maggie doesn't really know what she's doing on any front. If your using Windows either by emulation or Bootcamp I'm not sure about the Windows method of monitoring activity, I hope someone will fill that in. Norm Quote Link to comment

Norm If it hooks up to the USB port just drag it to the trash. That will disconnect it so you don't get that error. Quote Link to comment

+IVxIV
Not sure how similar Macs are to PC's, but I have a habit of turning the GPSr OFF before disconnecting the cable. That way I get the familiar two-tone "disconnect" sound when powering the GPSr off not when disconnecting the cable Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
Eject the volume in Finder, exactly as you would do for any other mounted disk drive such as a USB memory key, external drive, or network volume. If you remove the cable or just power off before doing so, you may eventually corrupt data - that's why you're getting the warning to tell you not to do that. MOST of the time, the write buffers will be retired and it'll be safe to do so, but eventually you'll get hosed. Quote Link to comment
