Loading Waypoints and Routes onto Explorist 210

Recommended Posts

Yet another attempt to come to terms with my 210 has ended in failure! I can connect the unit to my Vista running laptop as a drive - no problem. I can set up MemoryMap to see the GPS and lock on - no problem. I can set up MapPoint to see the GPS and lock on - no problem. Magellan Converter tells me "No Explorist was detected"!!

I do have a little more success on my XP running desktop, but even when I get a successful upload reported, nothing can be found on the GPS. Please help, this is driving me mad! :)

I've tried every combination of settings to remedy this, but nothing works. Has anyone any ideas? Is my 210, or the USB cable, goosed? Are there any settings I have missed? Please help, otherwise it's a new Garmin HCx next week! We're walking in wild Spain in May, and I need a unit that I can load with a set of PNF's I have bought.

I think you have to go into the menu and then to active map setup where you can choose the file with the points you want to display. You need to change from default poi file to the file where you saved the points that you are trying to load. I'll try and take some pics today and upload them to show you which menu and choices you need to make to make them show up if you need. I'm pretty sure that the issue is not theat they did not get to the unit, its that you need to make the right selection so they show up. I have a 500 but used to have a 210 and that was how it was.

Ah! In that case, how do I select which file to save the points to? I don't remember being offered a choice anywhere. Also, I have looked around the files on the unit, both directly and via usb connection on the PC, and could find nothing new!

I just know it's something stupid I'm doing, but that just makes it worse! An idiots guide would be more than welcome!

Finally, I have a system that works. I've been picking up little nuggets of information from here and there, which have just come together for me.

For anyone else with the same problem, this works for me.

I use oziexplorer to load the PNF's (Personal Navigation Files). This gives me waypoints on a blank map. I then use the ozi route manager to generate a route, using the waypoints in order. I can then export the waypoints to the POI folder on the GPS as a Magellan .upt file and the route to the Routes folder as a Magellan .rte file. This is done with the GPS connected in file transfer mode. It took me a while to realise that the Magellan needs waypoints as well as a route, and this is key to the process.

I have also found that I can plot a route directly onto my GB MemoryMap, by clicking points, then export the waypoints and route as above, using the MemoryMap GPS menu. Soooo much faster than keying marks into the GPS by hand and then using them to form a route!

As you can tell, I am relieved to have cracked this one! My Explorist 210 has a new lease of life and I've saved myself £200 plus as well. Off into the hills this weekend!

Sorry this old hat to most of you, but the Holy Grail to me!
