kfb
Hi! What's the difference between Nxx°xx'xxx" and Nxx°.xxxxx'? My GPS60CSx lists the latter, but many websites show the former as a location. The former is easier to understand. How are conversions done? Can my GPS be switched to permanently show Nxx°xx'xxx"? Thank you. Kristina Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
Simple different formats. Same spot - different ways of writing it. Common formats include: Decimal Degrees: DDD.ddddd Decimal Minutes: DDD MM.mmm Degree Minute Second: DDD MM SS Just really changes what unit has decimals. There are 60 seconds in one minute and 60 minutes in one degree. Yes your unit can be configured to display any of the above and more. Quote Link to comment
+EEeee!
Most of the time in geocaching you'll see and use the format that shows degrees and decimal minutes (N34 12.345 W086 34.123). If you change the units in your GPSr it will automatically change all the coordinates in your unit to that new format. It's possible to use that to do coordinate tranformations from one format to another, but a far easier way is to use one of the tools on the web like the one at the JeEep site: http://www.jeeep.com/details/coord Edited May 17, 2007 by EEeee! marnen
And to answer your questions about how the conversions are done, it's just simple arithmetic. 30° 0.500' = 30° 00' 30" = 30.00833°. (Yes, I did all that in my head.) Quote Link to comment
