+koikeeper
We're planning a vacation in the Outer Banks in a couple of weeks. Is there any broadband access in the area? What about free WIFI spots? We'll be staying in Duck. Quote Link to comment
+DavidMac
You may want to check out WifiFreeSpot. I don't see Duck in their directory, but that doesn't mean you can't find internet access at a hotel (most of the larger chain hotels have free internet nowdays) or by driving around and looking for a restaurant that advertises wifi. +koikeeper
Thanks for the info. I had checked that website previously. On JWIRE's website, it listed - Outer Banks Wireless Access Network (OBXWAN), 1230 Duck Road, Duck 27949. Does anyone know if this is free? This would be very close to where we are staying. +koikeeper
After more research, I found an email & contacted Outer Banks Wireless Access Network (OBXWAN). This is their response. Barrier Island Station (which is where we are staying) is completely covered by our network - just do a "find wireless networks" with your computer's wi-fi utility and select any OBXwan node that gives you a good signal. After connecting - just open up your favorite browser and you will be redirected to the login and purchase portal. Additonally, there is a free wireless service in the area called "OBXFREEWIFI" (not affiliated with us) that you may be able to pick up. It is extremely slow and adds local advertising to each page you load but may meet your needs. Hope this helps others going to this area. Quote Link to comment

Boy am I fortunate to have access to a VPN (the middleman can't stick an ad on the page if they can't decrypt the communication ). Still, that may work in a pinch. Hope you have a great trip.
