+buteo
Does anyone know of a website that converts the datum formats to decimal formats? Is there a simple way to convert one format to the other? Quote Link to comment
+cache_test_dummies
Does anyone know of a website that converts the datum formats to decimal formats? A good online resource can be found at JeEep.com. For an offline option, some people prefer to download and use fizzymagic's GeoCalc program. Is there a simple way to convert one format to the other? Some format conversions are easier than others. I really think most people just use one of the available resources to convert, rather than attempting to do the conversions by hand. fivedime
Scientific calculators with degrees/minutes/seconds input do the work for you. Just look for one with a key that has ° ' " on it. Or just go buy my personal favorite, the Casio fx-260...solar, never needs batteries, available at big box and electronics stores everywhere for about $8. Quote Link to comment

You know, it's kinda hard to maintain Geocaching's "rugged outdoorsy-type" public image when members of our community openly discuss their favorite brand and model of solar-powered scientific calculators. fivedime
I won't tell you how many of them I own, then. But I will tell you, for all you patient types these often go on sale for just a couple of dollars just after scholl starts every year, when school supplies go on clearance. Geocaching...the confluence of "geek" and "outdoors" LOL. Quote Link to comment
+tomfuller & Quill
For those of us who refuse to go "paperless", write down the minutes (including the decimal) and divide by 60. You do remember how to divide on paper don't you? If you have DDDMMSS.SS You divide the SS.SS by 60 to get the decimal minutes. Now if someone comes out with a solar powered GPSr, geocaching would be improved. If you have the decimal degrees from a website, multiply the decimal by 60 to get minutes and decimal minutes. You do remember how to multiply on paper don't you? Calculators, PDA's, GPSr's, and other electronic devices tend to get lost or not function properly from time to time. Pencils can be sharpened and we're supposed to be carrying them anyway to log all those micros. Tom Fuller Quote Link to comment
+Prime Suspect
Does anyone know of a website that converts the datum formats to decimal formats? Is there a simple way to convert one format to the other? That's apples and oranges. You can't convert one to the other. "Datum" isn't a format, it's a mathematical description of an ellipsoid that represents the surface of the earth. The datum you use, and the output format used are independent of each other.
