Lots of people load the card externally using a SD slot on their USB card reader. MUCH faster. I think now you can also see the card when in the GPS and the GPS is plugged into the USB port. Not sure if that gives you faster transfer, though. Quote Link to comment

Depends on what you mean by "the data". If your gps is writing track .gpx files to the card when you yank it I would imagine that data could be lost/corrupted. If your unit is powered off at time of the removal and you do not subsequently attack the card with a claw hammer, overwrite witha card reader , etc, your data (mapsets and .gpx alike) should be fine.
