Does a cache need to be on land?

I had a neat idea for a cashe. I wanted to plant a cache just offshore in the Chesapeake Bay attached to a crab pot. The typical way a crab pot is set is that it is attached with a rope to a small foam buoy. I would make the cache accessable either by boat, or by wading out to it in shallow water that's waist deep.

The beauty of finding this cache would be that you could keep any crabs the trap caught (a nice tasty treat to steam up!)...just be sure to re-bait the pot if it's empty. In the travel log, I would just want the finder to post how many crabs the pot had in it and the time, and if they removed them from the trap, set them free, or took them with them. This would be a great way to track how many crabs it's catching over time for everyone to see

This would be a seasonal cache too, since crabs are only active during the summer, and I would only be able to maintain it during the spring or summer months.

there are plenty of underwater caches around, so that's not a problem. I have zero idea (less than zero actually) if there are any legal or licensing issues involved with crab traps or those who want to keep crabs from them though.

Also, I am guessing that crabs in a trap won't live forever, so I would assume you would be checking the trap regularly as to avoid a trap full of dead crabs if the cache isn't found for awhile.

Finally, does this violate the "food in caches" rule? :) Mmmm...crab.

Posted information relative to Delaware in error, but you will need to check the regulations for Maryland or Virginia depending on the location you have in mind.

The Delaware regulations require a visit to the crab pot and removal of the crabs at least once per 72 hour period, and I would expect similar provisions in other states. A cache visit every three days is pretty high maintenance...

I'd be really careful placing this cache far, far away from any other real crab pots...

The real crab pots owners are usually a bit more than a little "touchy" if they see you bringing up their pots...
