Gpsmap 60csx Downloaded Track Log Data

I was wondering what kind of data gets downloaded with the tracklog on your pc software with the 60csx, I only have experience with magellan meridian, and with the mapsend software you can export the tracklog into a excel file that has fields for latitude and longitude Avg speed between points, Alt, time, travel time, heading and path time. I have read in some of these forums that the 60csx compresses the tracklog when a save is performed within the unit,like it deletes the timestamps or something like that. I assume that there is a difference in the data you get by downloading directly from the active track as opposed to a saved track. if anyone can tell me exactly what info you get in your exported excel file on the pc, or if this function is even present in the garmin software, it would be helpful. my meriplat fried(dropped it in water and the battery compartment opened) and I am trying to decide what to replace it with. My main features I am looking for is accuracy and track logging capability. also,

The Active Log of 10,000 points on the 60CSx (and similar Garmin units) records the latitude, longitude, time/date, and altitude of each point. Note that this is true of the Magellan tracklog as well - the additional data you mention such as headings, speeds, and elapsed times are all derived from the basic lat/long/timestamp information by the software. Both Garmin and Magellan units record the trackpoint times based on UTC although the software may convert this to a local timezone.

 

In addition, the 60CSx has the ability to save and display on the map page up to 20 simplified tracklogs. This feature is handy for creating a pseudo-map of features not included in the regular mapping software such as a local trail network, shipping channels in local harbors, property boundaries, etc. Since these Saved Tracks are primarily intended for display on the map, they do not include the timestamps of the regular Active Log. In addition, each Saved Track is limited to 500 points so when an Active Log is saved the firmware chooses up to 500 points that best preserve the shape of the original log that may contain far more points. Each Saved Track point then includes the latitude, longitude, and altitude, but no time/date information.

 

You can upload and download both Active and Saved tracklog data between the 60CSx (or other Garmins) and your PC. The only restriction is that when Active Log data is downloaded to the GPS from the PC the timestamp information is not transferred. I believe this is for data integrity purposes if the units are used for recording competitive events so no one can secretly alter the Active Log data stored in the unit.

 

So using the Active Log data uploaded to your PC the software can display the same types of data for each point that you list above.

So Magellans and Garmins use the similiar track log formats. I guess my next question to all the mapsource users out there is. Can you export a track log from mapsource into excel? And if so, what data fields does it create. Or maybe there is some 3rd party software out there that can out perform mapsource in this regard.
