Cedar Grove Seekers
Roundhouses are buildings/structures that were used to store and turn locomotives. These are rarely used today, but many still exist. I would propose that any exisitng roundhouse be logged in this category. I also porpose that it be a sub-category of Places / Buildings. This is not an existing Locationless cache. Link to comment
MapLady
Some have been restored for museums, such as Steamtown National Historic Site. It is in use for visitors to see how roundhouses worked, and the museum itself is constructed around the roundhouse. Link to comment
chstress53
I think this should be under Railroads as jake39 proposed back in Sept and subcatagories could include Roundhouses, Cabooses, Depots both active & historic, Funicular RR like this locationlessFunicular RR or like this one for BoxcarsMerci Boxcars or even Ta subcatagory for stops along the underground RRUnderground RR Directory Home>Places>Railroads Subcategories: Depots Roundhouses Cabooses Boxcars variables Merci & others Funicular RR Underground RR stops with a varity of variables Most of these were existing locationless caches as you can see but have not come over to Waymarking and have not been offered up to users to become categories yet. I hope they do in some form or another. Edited December 19, 2005 by chstress53 Link to comment
Cedar Grove Seekers
A sub-set of a railway category would be even better than merely a category under Buildings. I would suggest that any exisitng roundhouse be included, whether in use or used for other purposes such as a museum, or even vacant, or even possibly if there are enough remnants to show that a roundhouse did exist. +nikcap
What's the status of these categories? The was anither locationless cache for public model RR displays. But I can't find that one. I would also be interested in a location for railcars that are not connected to a mainline or spur any more. (like a Ship out of water, but for rail cars) Link to comment
Cedar Grove Seekers
I'm not really sure how the new proposals are working. I'm in "wait and see" mode. It sounds like there will be no problem having a general category called Railways given all the interest in various related sub-categories. Link to comment
