  1. I will stick with Magellan. On several occasions I would be right on the cache when a Garmin owner was ending up 30-60 feet away.

On the flip side, customer support from Magellan is not stellar but sufficient for my needs.

  2. What I do not understand is that MapSend Topo has not yet been upgraded. Last spring there was buzz that there was a 4.2 version floating around but Magellan has not yet officially released anything. When asked about it now, they say that it will be awhile. I guess DirectRoute took precedence. I just wish they would post their versions on the products page.

  3. I had it set for 200 from a lat/lon reading. I was under the impression (falsely perhaps) that the query would work from closest to farthest? I had some caches in between the ones that were missed. I translates the gpx to files for use in MapSend Topo as well as using gpx2html & plucker to transfer them to my PDA. They were absent from both.

  4. I have noticed that sometimes a query I generate does not include all the sites for the area even when I had placed no exclusion filters. This came to my attention when I travelled to Boston recently. I had already reveiwed some of the sites near downtown but when I received my query file, some had been excluded. I realize that I have since erased that query and the files, but I was wondering if this is a "sometimes" occurrence. The next time it occurs, I will keep both the query and the resulting file for your perusal if this would help.

  5. Are there any programs that would allow me to change a filtered selection of caches to a different icon. This way, when I upload to my Magellan Sporttrak Pro, I could easily distinguish between found and unfound caches? It would be helpful to have all the local caches loaded in case I want to drop off another while out caching. I currently use gpx2html & Plucker to upload to my PDA and I use either EasyGPS or Mapsend Topo to upload to my unit. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

  6. It would be nice for the owner(s) to maintain their cache(s) when they are needed. In the past, I have offered to assist if, for some reason, the owner cannot get to it immediately. A log book is $0.25, a pencil basically free and a baggie is as nominal in cost. Now, if it comes down to replacing the container, then perhaps e-mailing the owner along with the folks at geocache might help in keeping the sites more maintained. Nothing like archiving a site to get the owner's attention icon_redface.gif

  7. Of questionable worth is relative if you exclude the hunt. What I was commenting upon was the lack of exposure of this newbie to how other caches are placed and the myriad ways to make it both challengin and enjoyable. The seleted park was a good choice but the placement and the description were misleading. As noted, my current experience will insure that I will take note in the future of the person placing the cache before I go out of my way to attempt.

  8. I cam across this cache yesterday that was of questionable worth. Well, the fact of the matter, I didn't come across it all. As it turns out the person that hid the cahe had never found one. After searching for 30 minutes in a briar patch, I decided to let someone else claim the FTF. Later, when I logged the "not found", I noticed that the person had never found a single cache! I am not one to follow all rules but it would seem that caches hidden by virgin newbies should be avoided. Anybody have anything to add or their own comments? I know that from now on, I will think twice about going out of my way for such caches.

  9. Today I took three newbies out on their first hunt. One lady (she had learned of our planned excursion from a third party) was late arriving. She arrived in a sharp looking black dress and matching heels stating that she would have been on time but had to stop at a ATM to get some cash to go caching icon_biggrin.gif. After a good laugh (and generous amounts of ribbing throughout the day), we were able to successfully find two of the three caches. All enjoyed the time and I believe that they will soon be joining the ranks. I was wondering if anybody else has had something similar happen to them as well.

  10. FWIW: I am fairly new to this and currently have a Magellan SporTrak Pro. It is always right on and I have come across others with a Garmin ending about 40' away from the cache.

Mapsend Topo is the mapping SW I use & find it sufficient for caching. What I do not like about Magellan is the lack of info on their Web site for firmware or SW updates. Not very friendly site but I can live with it.

  11. I am toying with the idea of stacking the deck. I could put a lot of high cards but nothing that would beat a straight flush of low cards. The additional twist is that when they return to home base, they could trade up to three cards (four if they have an ace) just like in five card draw.

  12. I am hoping that I am not the only one to do this icon_eek.gif - I had put an unactivated TB in my pocket but neglected to remove until after I washed my pants. The label that held the activation key had of course dissolved and now I am stuck. Any suggestions on how I can get this one activated? Has anybody else gone done this path (path? what path? who needs a path!?!)? Thanks in advance for any info...

  13. Is there a way to have GPX2HTML generate the html for a specific gpx file to a specific directory? Currently I have the gpx2html program in different directories for each of the different pocket queries. Then I set up channels in Plucker for each one. I would like to tell gpx2html the file and the output directory. Is there a way to do this?

  14. I want to plan a Geo event with some friends & family members to introduce them to geocaching (or at a gathering of the usual cast of suspects). Five caches will be placed. Each contains five playing cards. There will be five teams and each team will try to find the caches in the order of their choosing. In one of the caches will be the coordinates for the meeting place. When everyone arrives, they will have a chance to discard as many cards as they choose and pick the same number of cards from the remaining cards. The team with the best hand then gets a free lunch (is there really such a thing?). Another option is for each person to put in $5-$10, all of which will be split by the winning team.

I would like some feedback from you on this idea or any other variations for me to consider. Thanks in advance.

  15. Well, since all my children are grown, I guess the rigors of testing will fall squarely on my golden retriever's shoulders icon_wink.gif. She immediately adopted my first trvel bug- Ripcow, the bodacious bovine in search of refuge. Ripcow's travels will be delayed a little.

  16. I am about to set free a set of travel bugs but I have some concerns about the durability of items. What has worked well for others? Any suggestions?
