iPhone owner here as well... I've hacked my phone and added several 3rd party applications... One of them is called Navizon, which connects to Navizon.com and it supposed to be a GPS product of some sort... I just got it working today where it pin-pointed my location at the office... From what I've heard posted around the boards (iPhone hacking sites, etc) is that the iPhone DOES have GPS capabilities, but they are turned off currently... I'm not sure if that is true, or someone just starting rumors... With that said... I don't think I would want to put my $500 phone to the conditions that my GPS has seen...

Will GPS hurt airplane equipment?
SimonTuffGuy replied to SimonTuffGuy's topic in GPS technology and devices
The FA did announce that it was ok to turn on electronic devices... I looked in the books and didn't see anything that talked about GPS devices... it just said no to cell phones, pages, etc. It was extreme over-reaction... Went something like this: Flight attendant said it was fine to turn on electronic devices... I went ahead and turned on the GPS, it acquired the signals (took 5~ minutes to finally grab them)... It was on for another 5 minutes when the flight attendant walked past, saw my "electronic equipment" and had a fit. She said "You're not allowed to have anything that transmits a signal turned on sir", to which I replied "This is a GPS device, it does not transmit any signals, it only receives a signal to tell you where you're at"... She snapped back with a "Let me rephrase that, you're not allowed to have anything that transmits OR RECEIVES a signal turned on... I suggest you turn it off now, unless you want to leave this plane in handcuffs." I turned it off because I was on a pretty strict time schedule to get into TX on time... I didn't have time to be handcuffed... -
Will GPS hurt airplane equipment?
SimonTuffGuy replied to SimonTuffGuy's topic in GPS technology and devices
To clarify just a bit... I'm using a GPSMap 60CSx and it was on a commercial airline flight. We were on a very small plane (ie. 2 seats, asile, 1 seat and then probably 13-14 total rows of seats) -

Basically... I was flying from PA to TX... I turned my GPS on to see "where" we were... The flight attendant saw my GPS, yelled at me, threatened to have me removed from the plane in handcuffs, etc... Does having my GPS on hurt the airplane equipment? It's not sending any signals, so I didn't see how it would, but I figured I'd ask the experts...

2GB SD card for Garmin 60cx - worth it?
SimonTuffGuy replied to JonB_SD's topic in GPS technology and devices
From what I've read... You will probably hit the 2025 map segment (or whatever you would call it) limit before hitting the maximum amount of space on the card... -
Advantages of topo software
SimonTuffGuy replied to Knight2000's topic in GPS technology and devices
It depends on what you'll be using the GPS for... If you're into hiking, off-roading, etc, you would probably find the topo software useful... If you plan to mainly use the device on the highway, you could check out the City Navigator software that has detailed information about roads. I purchased both when I got my 60CSx. I like having the availability to see the major roads that I travel to get someplace and then seeing the topo series for when I'm not following a road. -
More than 1000 waypoints of GPSMAP 60CSx?
SimonTuffGuy replied to SimonTuffGuy's topic in GPS technology and devices
Nice; thanks for the info. -
Is it possible to go above and beyond the 1000 limit on my 60CSx for waypoints? I have a gig mini-SD card, can they be put there and read from there (possibly a member problem with storing on the unit itself), and if so, how do I go about doing that? Thanks.

Pictures - Cool Cache Containers (CCC's)
SimonTuffGuy replied to AmishHacker's topic in General geocaching topics
I found one of these last week... By far the smallest container I've ever seen (couldn't really imagine anything smaller though either)... Pretty cool though! -
A set of Topo maps from Garmin (for the entire US) only runs $100~ if you look around. I got mine in a "kit" with my GPS... Try www.gpsdiscount.com and see what's there. I got the GPSMap 60CSx with Topo set and then added the car kit on for City Navigator. Paid $650 total shipped.

We WON! DoRoAlRy & Trouters1 teams won the 2006 Jeep
SimonTuffGuy replied to doroalry's topic in General geocaching topics
Sorry, but that Compass won't take you very far off the trail. I'd be looking to trade that at the first available dealership towards a Rubicon. Nice picture though! -
Mine should be in on Thursday.

Cannot get Cachmate to down load to PDA
SimonTuffGuy replied to P3FE's topic in GPS technology and devices
How can you blame that on Vista? I've been using Vista, GSAK and Cachemate without a SINGLE PROBLEM for the past ~3 weeks. -

Odd... The form here doesn't keep the PM's in the PM box like every other forum I'm a member on... (thus why I was confused)... I saw it in my e-mail however... Anyways... SOLD! Thanks. Getting packaged up now and will ship with our UPS man today! -

Are you sure you sent a PM? I don't see it! -
After bidding and winning this unit off EBay, I found a a better used Palm at work and decided to use it instead. This is a Palm IIIxe unit, 8 megs internal memory (the auction says 2, but the unit says 8 (booklets and the info on the Palm itself), black and white display and uses 2 triple A batteries to run. Comes with all the manuals, software, docking station, and a leather zip case. Perfect for the beginner paperless cacher (the EBay auction actually was geared towards someone who wanted to cache). I'm only looking to get what I paid, which was $25 total with shipping. (Here's the EBay auction that I won it off of: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...m=130081162508) Feel free to ask any questions, I'd be glad to help.

Noone else interested in helping here? -
Ahh... Found it... Go to http://www.shieldzone.com/rocky.html for that deal
-
Was there a discount code with that? I just went to order for my 60CSx, my Nikon D50 camera and my Palm and it's giving a total price without a 20% discount.

Paperless Caching - Let's Finish This
SimonTuffGuy replied to SimonTuffGuy's topic in GPS technology and devices
I also posted about having my category dissapear on the Cachemate forums (when resyncing new caches over from gsak) and they sent me to this link: http://www.gsak.net/help/hs40000.htm Seems to be down for me at the moment, but I followed this piece to a page where they had me run a Macro... I'm not sure if it's better to be running this macro or using the website in the above post (the Geocaching Express loger - http://boulter.com/geocaching/logger/) Suggestion from either end of that? Can you tell me your usual process when you go to update your logs? -
