  1. It seems that I have to log in several times throughout the day especially if I use any third-party tool that uses the API's. GSAK, Certitude, etc...

Is this something that can be resolved once and for all?

I would like my laptop, desktop and office workstations that I use frequently to be able to retain cookies so I don't have to keep logging in time and time again.

This is happening with FireFox, IE8 on XP and IE9 on Win7.

    Grrrr....

  2. I have recently run into some problems with a new geocacher that does not know how this game is played. They have found several of my caches and have not logged them in. The only reason I know this is they did sign the log in one cache but when I contacted them they did not know they should log the finds on line but also said they did not know how to do this. They made unequal trades and took a travel bug but did not log it either. They have no finds or hides registered. They did reply to one e-mail but have not received any others. I mentioned that the travel bug needs to be logged, but I am sure they don't know what a travel bug is. Any suggestions on how to proceed with this other than hope they reply?

That's nothing out of the ordinary anymore and it will just get worse and worse with all the phone apps.

My daughter has well over 12oo finds yet she has only logged about 400 of them. "Logging is no fun" for her. My son too with about 1000 finds, has only logged about 80.

Fortunately, they got started with me and they know what to do with TB's.

  3. This is the list Don J put together:

    • Working maps, especially with previewing PQs
    • More criteria options added to PQs, particularly "owned by" and "found by".
    • Favorites added to PQ criteria.
    • Favorite points added to GPX files.
    • Personal notes added to GPX files.
    • Ability to delete photos with deleting the entire log.
    • Ability to add text to the auto generated message that is sent when we delete another player's log.
    • Change text from "Needs Archive" to "Needs Reviewer Attention".
    • Ability to ignore all of a users caches.
    • Return the users location to the forum sidebar for users that have provided it in their profiles, (lost in the forum upgrade)
    • Ability to add corrected coordinates to puzzle cache page and have those coordinates included in the GPX file.
    • Notification for when photos are added to your cache page.
    • Notification for when logs are edited on your cache page.
    • Notification for "Needs Archived" and "Note" logs, (Actually part of the May '11 update, but it didn't work)
    • New hiders are presented with a simple quiz to verify they have at least glanced at the guidelines.
    • Add a Nano size.

All of this sounds pretty good! Let's hope nothing else gets broken in the process.

Curious though, the notice banner about the update is no longer being displayed.

  4.

I guess I shouldn't care, really, but I've got people logging challenges I created as found, after not actually completing the task.

For instance, I"ve got challenge that asks people to hike up a mountain and take a photo of yourself at the top. Sounds simple, right? Some people have taken a picture of themselves 1/2-way up, some have taken no picture at all, and one clever couple today drove up to the top and hiked down (after taking a photo of themselves at the top, LOL).

Another one I created asks people to go into a cave and place a rock with their caching name at the back of the cave. 1 cacher actually completed the challenge, 2 other cachers claimed they couldn't fit in the cave, so took a picture of themselves outside the cave and logged a 'completed' anyway.

Wonder if anyone else is experiencing this amusing phenomenon?

This is only one of the many reasons I have been so against these challenges in the first place. No accountability.

They get published without any sort of review process, cannot be edited after someone accepts a challenge, there is no way to insure any sort of quality or even legality. Groundspeak really should have simply listened to its customers when the request was to bring back virtuals. Not provide apples for oranges.

There is one here in my area where absolutely no verification is required to log as a completion. http://coord.info/CX1CFB

Fortunately, no one has lowered themselves to do such but in all reality, anyone in the world can claim the completion without ever setting foot in the park as suggested.

  5. I've looked at the challenges in my area and not one has me impressed nor interested in performing some inane stunt to log a completion. One, "Find the Brick" http://coord.info/CX4F5 in Petaluma, CA can't even be played as the object to find doesn't even exist.

I'm a geocacher. That's all. I want to go out and find something substantial. But then I'm not even a fan of the old virtuals but at least with them I have seen some redeeming value and will actually log one every now and then.

  6. 2 words: Power Trail

1000+ in a single day is possible now.

Ok.. Let's do some math. 24 hours = 1440 minutes.

For someone to "Seek, Find AND rehide" 1000 geocaches in one 24 hour period, that geocacher would have to be operating at 1 geocache every 1.44 minutes.

That's in a 24 hour period folks. No sleep, no bathroom breaks, no FUEL breaks and would require driving, eating and caching in rotations.

Theoretically it can be done but I sure as heck wouldn't want to try it.

My personal best was not on a power trail, 240 in 24 hours with one other cacher. I think that's good enough for me.

  7. Anyone used this yet ?? Or know anything about it ???

This will change geocaching in a big way and it's only 20$

Yea.. I've found a few.. They are OK I guess but I won't be placing any. Where they can be fun is at events where someone will have one on them advertising the coordinates to a yet unpublished cache. Kind of a 'door prize' so to speak.

The biggest problem I see with the chirps is that only specific Garmin GPSr's have the technology and from what I've seen, Groundspeak does not allow the corporate references to the product in a geocache description (may have changed?).

  8. However, if you delete a log for being blank and the logger appeals to GS, it will most likely get reinstated.

Let them appeal! When I delete a log, I will usually send an email to the cacher letting them know why I am deleting the log. If they choose to relog with a few words - even if critical, I'll accept it. A blank log is inappropriate in any situation.

    http://www.geocaching.com/about/finding.aspx

Step 4 – The Actual Find

    (6) When you get home, log your experience online by going back to that cache page and using the links provided. The cache owner is automatically notified of your log and is always happy to know about your adventure, the condition of their cache, and any environmental factors. Upload photos to share your experience visually with other geocachers.

Certainly not taken literally by anyone but still a basic curtesy to at least write something.

Even an insult like TFTC is better than a blank log.

  9. As the cache owner it is your responsibility to insure that a log posted on the cache page is appropriate.

    6.7. Log Deletion

"It is one of your maintenance duties as the cache owner to monitor quality control of posts to the cache page. To this end, you have the power to delete logs.

Use your powers carefully. The complete set of logs tells the story of the cache or that Trackable Item. Once it is deleted, you cannot restore it. You also have the power to permanently encrypt a log, which is a nice alternative to deletion.

Many logging errors are simple mistakes. Assume the best and please deal kindly with logs that may be in error: Are they novices using "Found it!" for repeat visits? Are they cachers entering finds on the wrong cache page?

If you must, delete a log by using the View This Log link. That link will open the log on its own page. Above the log you'll see a "Delete Log" and a "Permanently Encrypt" button. If you choose to delete, you will be asked "Are you sure you want to delete this log entry?" and must click "Yes." Again: once it is deleted, you cannot restore it."

I see a blank log to be an insult to the placer in as much as the finder thought so little of the find that they are only acknowledging it enough to claim the smiley.

Why not just send them a note reflecting something similar and suggest that they update their log? If not, just delete it and send a note to the logger that their blank log is deemed inappropriate and ask them to try again.

  10. I'm really surprised there are no replies to this yet.

O really don't know anything about the Delorme's but I've used the 60CSx, Oregon 400t, 550t and now the 62s. For geocaching, my all time favorite was the 60CSx over the Oregon's but the Oregon's have the paperless feature. But.. IMHO, the Oregon's menu navigation and touchscreen sucked. I used the 550t for a full year before I was so angry that i punched it! The same day I upgraded (YES upgraded) to the 62S and with one very minor exception, it's the best GPS (again IMHO) for geocaching Garmin ever made. Now if only they could add the ability to see the cache names on the map without needing to hover with the cursor I would be a very, very happy cacher.

  11. I have been using the 62s for a couple of months now and this function has always been there for me to use. As far as my experience goes, as long as the caches are loaded on the GPS then when viewing them on a map just hover over them using the cursor and the cache name apears at the top of the screen. If you push enter when hovering over then you will be shown the cache info screen and can then opt to navigate to it. I hope this helps with your question.

    LB

Thanks LB but that's not what I'm referring to.

On the 60CSx, you could simply look at the map and read several cache names without moving anything. Just a glance and you can tell which cache is which within a certain area.

With the 62s, you have to move the cursor and hover like you mention.

  12. Yea, I saw this but nowhere does it mention how to change the default symbol/icon for a found geocache.

Well apparently the text files have been edited.

Right click, save as.., and put it in your custom symbols directory.

Already did.. and made sure it was 24bit but when I mark a cache as found, I get the open treasure box.

I didn't realize GS was going to rename the file. Save it as Geocache Found.bmp. Exactly the way I typed it. If that doesn't work, your SOL. Sorry.

Exactly as I did too.. No go.

Actually I see that mine saved in all lower case. Trying again.

Hey!! Who would have thought the name was case sensitive?!?!? It works! Thank you!

  16. One of the things I really liked about the 60CSx was that I could easily see geocache names hovering over caches when looking at the map. This went away with the Oregon (one of the many reasons I dumpped it) and now that I have the 62s, I would really like to be able to use this feature again. Any tips on how to make it work?

  17. Similar question for a different unit.

I went through the list of icons i had available on my eTrex Legend H. To see if there might be a better icon to go with on the caching side and to mark my DNFs. For now i use the Danger (skull and cross bones) icon for DNFs. Well i noticed there is a section of Custom icons but i can't find a way to define them. Is there a way i can design my own custom icons and upload them to my unit? I was looking through them from the Geocaching setup page. So maybe i'm on the wrong screen for it.

There are tons of ways to create them..

    http://www.gpsfix.net/custom-symbols/

The question is how do you get the GPS to recognize them? Replace the default with custom?

Is it the naming of the image?
