  1. I have yet to come across a college campus without a cache!! In fact, when I travel for caching, I will often look for a college town because I know that there will be some original and creative hides.
  2. Then you for one certainly could not complain if someone left jewish, atheist, muslim, wiccan, satanic, or morman items in caches just to name a very few. Of course, some of the above would be traded for quite quickly, you get the drift.
  3. What a great idea! Have you seen any of the above that would fit a micro??? <GRIN> Knowing how you feel about micro's No but really. Then we would be arguing about political statements being left in caches. Maybe swag should be limited to toys, trinkets, tb's and coins?
  4. Does anyone really need a reason? My kids often don't bother to log their finds. The fun for them is the hunt and spending time with their old man (OK I added that tidbit). They both have their own accounts and cache with me often but for them it's really not about the numbers. For me though, I would prefer that when someone finds a cache I've placed they log their find to at least let me know that they've been there and the cache is still findable.
  5. IMHO, these items are trash and I treat them as such. Wait! before you flame me for this, please just take a look at the news. Mrs Gibbons, 54, was jailed by a Sudanese court on Thursday after allowing her class of seven-year-olds to name a teddy bear Mohammed. People have been rioting in the streets demanding her execution! This is only a brief example of what unrestrained religion is capable of. Why would church swag be appropriate in any geocache?
  6. Any cache that would put the seeker at risk. I'm not talking about 5 terrain here, I'm talking about a cache placed in a very bad neighborhood or in an area where you have to hope the local hobo isn't home while you search. We were in San Francisco a while back and while searching for a cache, we came up with syringes, and other items not suited to be mentioned here. Needless to say, it was one of our only DNF's of the day.
  7. What a great question! I hide caches simply to give a little back to those who have placed the caches I find. As for placement, I'm in a fairly urban area so there are very few areas that stand out as a place to lure visitors. Instead, I just try and provide fun for my peers. I have place a few that are in scenic areas where loggers have appreciated the area but nothing like some of the others I have visited. Thanks to all of you that have gone out of your way to bring such places to out attention.
  8. I'm fairly new at this game but I have found a good number of caches - MOST of them have been a lot of fun! There are a few that stand out though that make me wonder just wtf the hider was thinking when he/she placed the cache. I would have to say that one of the lamest caches I have found was a drilled out pinecone with a rolled up peice of paper wedged into the hole with no baggie, no plug nothing. Just a wedge of paper pushed into the hole. To top that off - the pine cone was laying on the ground on a dirt sidewalk. I thought that maybe it had been muggled but on inspecting the log, it was obviously just replaced so it was pretty clear the hider meant it to be lame. Another (by the same hider) was a paper scroll in a stick - again with no means of weatherproofing. Sometimes though, a lame hide may be well intended but the hider simply has no clue of permanence.
  9. Rabbits Eye View for me... Same size but not exactly burried. Just cammo'ed.
  10. 10:30A Pacific. I've noticed quirkiness since the DST time change. But what I've been seeing lately is that the servers are off by about 12 hours and PQ's take several hours to arrive. The additional slowness seem to me like an issue with database responses. Is this system running MSSQL & IIS or are these servers running Linux?
  11. Do you suppose this is why external stats sites like http://boulter.com/geocaching/leaders/ and http://www.cacherstats.com/ are not updating anymore?
  12. I think that being able to see where caches once were could help avoid bad areas. If I am looking at a spot to place a cache, I would sure like to know if there had been a cache nearby and why it has been archived. Especially if it was due to excessive muggle activity. The logs in the archived listing may give a placer an idea of what to expect.
  13. There are 488392 active caches worldwide as of 11/24/2007. This means that a mere 11608 more QUALITY placements could hit the 500,000 mark! Will it happen? Will it be notable? Will it be one that will gain reverence for quality and permanence? Only time will tell! Z..
  14. Just think how much E-Mail this person gets on weekends! - As for the numbers of caches placed by one person, I for one would begin by thanking him or her for the effort and for the caches. Have you tried communicating with the placer? Maybe a simple request to open an area for you to place a few for him/her to find could be the beginning of a fun relationship. 650 may seem like a high number but if a cache is well planned and is of good construction, why would the placer ever need to revisit except to replace a log? I found a cache just the other day (GCC9E3) that was placed in January of '03 that has never been maintained because it han't needed it! The log book isn't even full yet. I'll tell you, it sure was a kick to read back almost 5 years in the log!
  15. 1.how many geocaches have you found? Just over 1800 2.how many geocaches have you hidden? about 20 3.how many people do you know go geocaching with you? varies among about 10 others. 4.how many times have you gone on a long trip just for a geocache ^^ What's a long trip? The farthest I've travelled just to cache is only about 100 miles but I've cached over 600 miles away. 5.how many geocaches have you found in just one day? The most is 76. 6.how many items have you traded? Ugh.. thousands.. 7.how many times have you gone geocaching with out a gps and found the geocache that you were looking for? Only three or four times so far.. Does this include simply forgetting to load the newest caches? If so, a few more.
  16. For me, if I find a disabled cache, it's only because it wasn't disabled when I placed it in my GPS & PDA so yes, of course I would log it if I found it and signed the log. Same goes for an archived cache. If I had a disabled cache out there somewhere it would only be because I have been told that it is in dire need of my inspection for whatever reason - missing, needs new log or maintenance so if a cacher does find it, I would not only allow them the find, I would probably thank them for confirming that it's still there in the first place as they may have just saved me the trip!
  17. I think I found one within 15 minutes of it being published about 5 miles away.
  18. Let's talk about 'cheap' items. I recently placed a cache with a military theme which contained/s USArmy cheverons, micro-heliocopter's and 100 plastic soldiers. Those soldiers cost me MAYBE $0.01 each. The cheverons are the real thing - sew on's that a neighbor tossed out when she no longer needed them, and micro heilocopter magnets found at a local party wherehouse. something like 10 for a buck. While on my way to restock the cache I was at the cache one day, I met up with a fellow cacher with his two pre-teens on the trail who had a BLAST going thru the cache. Yes, it pleased me to see the kids eyes light up and pocket some of the items. Since then, I have placed hundreds od cheverons and soldiers. Now I have another 1000 soldiers ready to deploy in my next ammo box hide. Another fun one was finding bags of 100 marbles for $2.00 a bag. I only picked up 500 but thinking of themes for this hide, I'm now wondering how much 10,000 marbles would weigh ;-) So.. trash is one thing, cheap is another that can really be loads of fun to the right cacher.
  19. I sure wish I could have made it but family comes first.. Maybe the big 30,000?
  20. When using the credit card option from the link I posted above, you can purchase multiple years worth of premium membership by just entering more than one year in the quantity field of your shopping cart. Perfect! Thanks.
  21. Cool idea! Unfortunately, most of the geocaches I've sen will barely hold a small notepad let alone a post card.
  22. Along this same line, I'm not due for a few more months but I'm wondering if I can renew for more than a year at a time? Say two or three years in advance?
  23. Wow.. That will really vary. I have seen caches pop up on my closest to home lists, gone out and found the cache, come home to log it and not receive the E-mail notification for up to several hours later. Bring in IT however, I would never complain about something like that because I realize that it is very easy to overload an email server and there will ofter be several other varying factors which will impact the timliness of a delivery.
