  1. All right, I'm going to call you out on this one and I don't think I'm a jerk for doing so. If you worked alone, that is one cache every six minutes for 24 hours. If they were all 500 feet apart as the geocaching standards mandate, you had to move pretty fast. How did you do it? All 1/1s in the city? Can be done!! Just take a look at the density of areas like San Jose CA and Yuba City CA. It's easy to pull in 15/hr in some of the areas with such density and still manage food & restroom breaks. Heck, I pulled in 20 in less than two hours just driving from Sonoma to Vallejo!
  2. I have been offered this option on a few occasions and have yet to take them up on it. However, I did recently have a cache go missing - it was a very easy 1x1.5 that should have been an extremely easy find. So when I received a few DNF's I knew it had to be missing. I considered this and knowing that the cachers who were kind enough to actually log a DNF would have found the cache had it been there, I offered the option to log just prior to my archiving the cache. Oh. And Yup! I'll do it again if the situation warrants. My logic? These cachers did me a favor by logging the DNF in the first place! I can't visit each of my caches every weekend one doesn't get logged. By logging the DNF, they let me know that I need to take a look. So, to me, the fact that they found that the cache was missing is as good as a find and I will honor it as such. If this were one of my more difficult hides though.. I may have a different offer or none at all. Had the cache still been where intended, the whole topic would be moot. While I haven't logged a DNF as a find as offered, there may just be that one that should have been so simple that I would take the offer and embrace my smiley.
  3. The best I've been able to get away with is 76. I was game for more but my caching buddy was just plain worn out! As for fun, It sure can be - especially if you feed off each other's enthusiasm. Even funner if you can remember each cache during the logging and bait for comments..

Thanks for reporting it. We are already working on it. Just curious here but what platform is the site running on? Windows? Linux? IIS or Apache? MS SQL or MySQL? I've seen a lot of similar issues with IIS and the worker process in IIS requiring periodic recycling when handling excessive calls to a SQL DB. But I'm just assuming that this is a system issue and not some DDOS or bandwidth issue at the ISP.
  5. I'd be thankful that you have that many to choose from! I've been thru towns that dont have a single cache for miles!
  6. Pretty much the same over here.. Smallest was a small aluminum capsule about the size as a tylenol pill, just a little smaller than the typical nono. The largest was a 10 gallon rubbermaid type of storage container.
  7. Good questions Reptlcal. 1 - Depends on the situation. I have been and have had what we call Beta Testers who actually do find the cache but do not log until after someone else grabs the FTF. 2 - Clean up the best you can and notify the cache owner! Do your best to return the goods to the hider. Especially the log. 3 - Consider it a rescue mission and find it! Remember, you are the eyes for the hider. In that case be sure to advise the cache owner. 4 - Do you have an alternative logging requirement for the cache? If not, is it situated in such a way that it can be seen but difficult or unsafe to reach? I can see where someone of limited abilities may not desire to risk life & limb to climb a tree just for a smiley. In that case, what's the harm? 5 - Again, this would depend entirely on the cache owners ALR if any. You found it and signed the log, thus proving that you did indeed find it. Is it so important to the cache owner that you rounded off Pi to the 37,456 digit? If so, one would expect some validation requirement before logging.
  8. Your knees are in a lot better shape then mine. I can stand a lot of pain, but a 1/2 mile hike will keep me up in pain for a night or two. It don't matter if I take my Viciden or not. Ibuprofen don't do it for me. I did my share of hikes in my younger days, but even if my knees were good I don't think I would be able to do a 16mile hike anymore. I'm hoping to get total knee replacements this year. But even if I do I doubt I will ever be in shape to do a 16 mile hike again. Never give up!!! I feel for you and I can relate to the pain. Please let us know how it goes after the replacements. A friend of mine just had his done and he's actually trying to jog for the first time in over 20 years! It seems that our mental state can have such a huge impact on out physical state. How's that Nike commercial go again? "Just do it"
  9. Coincidence will happen. Such is life. I recently found my self in a location while caching that I had not been to in nearly 25 years. While I was there signing the log, I realized that the last time I was on that same street, a shootout took place that killed two people while I was a mere 1/4 mile from the scene. In this society (US) we have some pretty big cites with some pretty big problems. Sure, one day you can be signing a nano log only to realize the next that that vagrant that was begging you for a quarter just after you put the nano back in place is the same guy in the news that was beaten to death over a food stamp. Humanity sucks doesn't it?
  10. I certainly do not have your experience as I've only been caching just under a year but I do have to ask this: Why does it matter to you? This game as far as I have experienced is one that will be as different to each cacher as is a snow flake different from a cow! It bothers you that some cachers go after virtuals from their recliner? That someone else logs for them? They post a find on a cache in a different town? I just don't get how this can effect you in any way? To me, the thrill is in the find and I often pass up virtuals and Earthcaches if there is a traditional nearby. Does this make a non participant? Just let it go. It doesn't hurt anyone but the logger. This is a game isn't it? Personally, I am more offended by arrogance and attitude than by someone out having fun. If I were you, I'd be more upset with the one liner log entries that consist of nothing but TFTH ot TFTC, but even there, that would only apply to the caches I've placed. Maybe you are looking at this game/hobby/activity/sport as something it's not?
  11. Report them? I don't know where you live but around here, what they did is called 'Breaking and Entering' or at least criminal tresspass. Had the property owner mistaken a GPS or other tool for a weapon, someone would be seriously injured if not dead. This is one reason why I avoid caches placed on private property that cannot be reached from the sidewalk or roadway. Not seeing your cache page, I cannot comment on your description or hint but If it were me, I would give explicit instructions in bright bold lettering.
  12. I for one would be thanking you for saving me the time and the trip! But! I would like to get to read log. I've replaced many a missing, full or damaged logs in my travels and try to keep some with me when I'm caching. I find that nano's and bison tube logs are ususlly the ones needing the most attention.
  13. As a retired Park Ranger I am appalled that Goodrich would have phrased his log in that manner but at least he went so far as to research the game. Or.. as you see, he only has one find, I wonder if this is just a sock puppet account. If not, maybe he's just a rookie and still in that wannabe stage. Now, if the cache owner had obtained permission first and took measures to insure that seekers would have a minimum impact, the cache may still be in place.
  14. What slows me down is family commitment and/or the inability to solve the closest puzzle caches. There are very few left in this area that I haven't found that don't require a good long hike but that still doesn't stop me. I just grab a caching buddy and hit the road! While the cost of fuel is an issue, it's a very minor one. Think of the other hobbies one could be into.. Sky diving, GOLF, Race car driving, drugs, alcohol... What's a full tank of gas cost? Maybe $50 US for the average car? That's at least a full day of caching. Still less than half the cost of 18 holes at Pebble Beach even with lunch! So.. Compare that with lift tickets and lodging! Or how about some SCUBA? Been water skiiing lately? $100 for fuel just to get the boat up to speed for a couple of hours. Not to mention, when I'm out caching with Bootsey, we're also tourists. So, we just make a weekend out of it and we still get in our geofix. Bummer that I can't cache every day like I was when I was a noob, but if I can get out a couple of times a week, I feel ok about it. J..
  15. Same here - Left knee & Right anklegave me a 31% disability but I still do it. Just need some recovery time and a bunch of Ibuprofin. Heck, check this out.. Nemesis - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCRZBD I just can't kneel down much.
  16. That's AWESOME!!!!!! Thanks!
  17. All I can add is a THANK YOU! for doing the right thing once you realized what the game was all about. I'm sure many caches of all shapes and sizes have disappeared in a similar fashion but the finder didn't take the time to look us up. Kudo's on your effort. I hope you can come up with a GPS and join in on the fun! Jim..
  18. I only have two puzzle caches out there right now but for me, I don't mind cahcers helping each other out as long as it's not posted in the logs as a complete spioler. Actually, I would encourage group finds! After all, this game/hobby/addiction is one where you have an opportunity to meet some really great people and build some long lasting friendships! Cache with a buddy (or a dozen!) Have a great time and come find my caches!
  19. Wow.. That's an entirely different scenario. So someone grabbed the coin and swapped it with a note and a peice of wood?
  20. Let me ask you this then; Would you have been equally as upset had you hiked all that way and not found anything because the last person there took the coin and didn't log it? Not me, because for me, this is geocaching not geocoin grabbing. Unfortunately there are people out there that collect other peoples coins and don't like to move them along as they should. This is a risk we all take when we release a coin or TB. I have several really cool coins (IMHO) that I will not release just because I know that after a while, they will fall into the hands of this sort of person. So.. What can some one do when they want to share their coin? Create geocoin proxy's to release so those who want to add that little custom icon to their stats page may do so and you lose nothing. Z..
  21. CONGRATS!!!! And welcome to our addiction, obsession, hobby! Yea That's it! Just wait... If you let geocaching guide you, you are in for some fantastic journeys and will be treated to sights you only thought existed on TV. Not to mention meeting new people and new friends. Happy caching!
  22. Personally, I would prefer that someone who seeks one of my caches DNF's it if they can't find it. Not only does it raise a flag for me to keep an eye on it, it adds to the character of the logs! If the hide is a good one, I expect a DNF every now and then. What would worry me is no DNF's and no logged finds over an extended period of time.
  23. Heck yea! but never a serious injury fortunately. I often spring leaks and leave DNA while caching. Especially if we're out on a hike and a cache is hidden amongst the native plant life. It's funny too, just last week my daughter, Kiwigirl92, chastised me for not carrying a first aid kit with me after I began to lose juice after poking my finger while reaching for a cache. Maybe one of the things beginners should consider is getting a tetanus booster before you begin caching!
  24. mormOn D'OH! I guess THIS moRon needs to be more careful with the keyboard! (tnx) You'd think with myrecent caching at the SLC temple, I'd know an o from an a.
