1. I agree that it's a business and indeed it is not essential to use the app. What I object to is the fact that the now classic app, which had to be paid for, has far more functionality than the new "free" app unless you become a premium member which I think is moving away from the original ethos of geocaching!! I don't recall, as a member, seeing any notification of this, in my opinion, retrograde change for members!!
2. Can anyone explain why the new app won't allow access to caches with a difficulty above 1.5 and why it is impossible to create lists for off line use? If I was being cynical I would assume that it is just a way of forcing members to become premium members, which I think is wrong but would like to be convinced that this is not the case.
3. I have resorted to taking a picture of the etrex geocache display page which shows that for Cache GC3D4AA the displayed information is NH 44162 58250 whereas the correct datuum is NH 44243 58537, unfortunately there does not appear to be a way of attaching the image. This offset is much the same for all geocaches downloaded. It does not affect the accuracy of the gps but is still a puzzle as to why it happens.
4. Yes that is exactly what is shown, if you select British Grid the other settings are fixed. Its interesting that your Etrex 20 does not demonstrate the same positional difference. I have never heard of the GC page being deliberately offset I have often in the past just copied the data by hand and never had any problems. As previously stated if the Geocache data on the GPS (which has been downloaded using Garmin Communicator) is then transferred to a Waypoint on the Etrex the positional data is as shown on the GC webpage it is only when you display the individual Geocache under Geocaches, on the Etrex, that the difference becomes apparent.
5. That certainly could be the explanation and would explain why the offset varies slightly from Geocache to Geocache. As I recall the OS grid is presented in squares whereas WGS84 is strictly in a slightly curved trapezoid shape and to convert to OS grid there was what was referred to as a "rubber conversion", to get the OS grid to convert between the two. If that is the explanation then Garmin, as I thought, have used a different algorithm for the Geocache display page on the GPS than for the Wapoint page which although strange could explain everything. Just a pity that they don't appear to be interested!
6. Nothing to do with the map. This only seems to happen if you are working OS grid, if you go to the geocaching data page on the GPS the co-ords are not the same as those shown on the web page on the gc site before downloading. I think it is just a display algorithm problem on the page because the positional data is correct if you save it in wgs 84, it is also correct if you save the geocache on the gps to a waypoint.
7. Has anyone else noticed that if you save a geocache in OS grid co-ords using garmin communicator from the web page the OS position on the etrex geocache page is not the same as shown on the web page. This would only appear to be a display problem as if you then save the geocache on the etrex to a waypoint the position is displayed correctly. I have been in touch with Garmin support and they recommended a full reset and software update but this does not resolve the problem and they have not offered any other explanation for the error. Any explanation would be gratefully received (or is it just me).
8. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're doing, loc files downloaded by clicking the "loc waypoint file" button on a cache page will download a loc, but that file does not "contain all of the data description". By data decription, do you mean the long narrative on the cache page? The loc just contains the cache name and ID, coordinates, type, and the url of the cache description. I downloaded a .loc file using a Basic member account, and the positional data is still there. I'm not sure what the issue is. Here are the contents of a loc: <loc version="1.0" src="Groundspeak"> <waypoint>
blue Bird Cache by 01123581321
<coord lat="40.71595" lon="-74.359183"/> <type>Geocache</type>
</waypoint></loc> I agree that is what I can see in the loc file but easygps for some reason is no longer either importing or converting the coord data. All I get in easygps is a load of zeros for the coord position. I was looking for some advice as to what may be going on and how the problem may be solved.
9. Are you, by chance, trying to download Premium Member only cache? As a regular member you won't get the coordinates. I have been a member for several years and have never had this problem before. All of the cache info is downloaded with the exception of the positional data which is just zeros
10. I have been using Easy gps for years to convert the downloaded Loc files and transfer them to my GPS. Recently I have noticed that the loc files still contain all of the data description of the cache but the fields for the positional data are full of zeros. Any help would be greatly appreciated in solving this particular problem.
11. I went through the normal procedure including adding a note to the travel bug site at the time. I only noticed yesterday while dropping other bugs that the travel bug was still being shown in my drop box. On visiting the travel bugs own site I see that it is still being shown as with me. I have tried to go back and edit my original log for the Geocache but the drop box disappears.
12. In May I dropped off a Travel Bug (Greg the Marine) in Penrhos Park (GC1BB4) but I have just noticed that the Travel Bug is still being shown as with me. How do i get this changed to show that the Bug is no longer with me?
13. Does anybody know why the GeocacheUK site account appears to have been suspended??
