  1. I would download again from Garmin's site and try again. Also make sure the process of upgrading the unit is completely finished. You could have disconnected too early thinking it was finished. If memory serves me correctly there is a point where it seems stalled but it is actually still cooking away doing it's thing. Olar
  2. Well it's not used on-line but it is a free download. GeoCalc is an excellent app created by fellow cacher, Fizzymagic. Olar
  3. Do you have Mapsource on your computer? Are you able to download/upload to the Rino from there? Also make sure that on your Rino you have selected Garmin as the language format for the serial interface. Good luck, Olar
  4. You can see a list of those available here. Olar
  5. Tried a couple from my POI file which are all caches and list created by GSAK. I don't get the "Found" "Note" "Stop" type compass page display that would normally be seen when going to a cache, just the basic screen normally seen for non-treasure chest waypoints. My poi file was loaded 2 or 3 weeks ago so maybe I'll do a fresh one and see if that makes a difference. Olar
  6. Thanks S-57. That solved the problem of connecting on my computer at work. Olar
  7. June 11 is good for me. Additional good dates would be: May 27, 28 June 3, 4, 24, 25 July 8, 9, 22, 23 Olar
  8. Actually they both autoroute on the handheld. A little gift from Garmin a few years ago when City Select didn't have much coverage for Canada particularly in rural areas. MG Canada 4 is getting a bit dated and I doubt we'll ever see a version upgrade since City Select is almost 100% coverage of Canada. CharlieZ you could try the same route on your PC and verify that you get a good route on it. Also check that under the Maps tab down at the bottom you have checkmarked the "Include route calculation data". Your problem sure sounds like your 60C is using the basemap to autoroute. While viewing the map page press menu/setup map/scroll to "i" information, press menu and you will see what mapsets are on your unit. Click on "show Metroguide Canada". Good luck, Olar
  9. Definitely Chloe (spelling??) from the TV show "24". That woman could find a cache without leaving her computer desk I'm sure. Olar
  10. The erasing of existing maps is automatic and part of any mapset segment download. That can fool some people that may think they are adding maps to what is already on the handheld not realizing the process will clear out the unit of all maps before loading the new ones. Cheers, Olar
  11. Don't forget that you will have to obtain a second unlock code in order to download the CS maps to a new 60csx. The original CS purchase will provide for use on a second unit so it will not cost you anything extra. You will love the 60csx. Cheers, Olar
  12. Thanks Olar..........were in Brampton are you located..........i'm on Massey Street........Bramalea and North Park area........Brampton Mike I'm in the 'G' section near Torbram & Queen. There are a few others in the immediate area that I know of. Obviously you are just starting out with caching so if you are interested in meeting others involved in this sport there are a couple of events coming up soon. One is a large day long picnic type, see it here which is tomorrow. Another is a pub-nite which are always popular and well attended. If you like to do the bicycle thing a group are planning a day-trip for the near future. You can read about it in the Canada discussion forum here. A caching event like this would yield probably a dozen cache finds or more. I know you would be very welcome at any of the above and there are many other get-together events on a regular basis. Cheers, Olar
  13. It should work. A friend of mine borrowed my 315's cable for his Sportrak and it was fine so going the other way should be OK. Olar
  14. No, the only maps that can be downloaded are Garmin's own proprietary Mapsource maps like Topo Canada. This is the case of all GPSr manufacturers. Apparently there is an application out there somewhere that allows you to make your own into a usuable format but I don't think many cachers use it or have even tried. Cheers, Olar
  15. If total accuracy is not an issue and you have a steady hand on the mouse you can display your route on Mapsource and then use the track draw tool to trace the route and create your track. Kind of crude but does the job in a pinch. Cheers, Olar
  16. Last night I had to download 2.7 a second time from Garmin both direct without Webupdater. The first file would not even Un-zip but the second try worked fine. I'll bet Garmin's server was so busy that I did not get a complete download on my first attempt. Olar
  17. From what I've read here in the forums recently is that the current version of City Navigator has very large map segments which is a problem for units that do not have expandable map memory. You may have to purchase a larger memory card than what came with your 60csx depending on the area you want to download. There have been hints that the next version will have maps in a more manageable size similar to that of City Select. Olar
  18. There should be no problem trying to explain to the OPP what Geocaching is based on a quote from another Orillia area cache GCJBMR which reads: This demonstrates that we cachers are not trying to operate in an underground type fashion and have always strived to be upfront and forthcoming (to quote swifty). I wonder if the cache owners original contact within the OPP is still around? Wouldn't hurt to have his/her name in advance for any discussions with PC Dwyer or others. Good Luck, Olar
  19. Read it in todays online Orillia Packet-Times. Oops! Olar
  20. I'm sorry Neo_Geo but you are wrong. Provided an individual is a premium member and are 'logged-in' when viewing an individual cache page they can download a .gpx file of its detail. See ...Cache Page HTH That's correct Hi-Tek however Neo_Geo is referring to downloading from a list of caches on a search page and not from an individual cache page. It sounds like the OP is downloading from a search page and is getting the only format available from there, .loc. Olar
  21. Most mapping software, including Garmin's Mapsource, will allow you to measure out in any direction from any point and create a waypoint. If you want to see a circle on the map some applications have a shape drawing feature. Draw a circle centred on a specific waypoint (cache) and sized to your radius. A quick and dirty way would be in Mapsource which allows you to create a track by freehand drawing. Draw a circle around the cache with a rough radius of 528 ft., save it as a track, download to your GPSr and head out to the actual location. Find a new cache hiding spot outside of the track displayed on your unit. When you've made your choice do a "find" on the cache close-by and verify you are outside the minimum distance. Allow yourself a 20 ft. margin of error just to be safe. Cheers, Olar
  22. I used one for a couple of years and thought it was just fine. Of course this was before the colour units and just after a non-mapping Maggy 315 so I didn't have much to compare it to at the time. A plus for geocaching is the swivel external antenna. You can hold it almost anyway you want and still have the antenna straight up. Being able to change the display from landscape to portrait is handy also. Accuracy is as good as most and all the bells and whistles are there. On the downside it's heavier due to having 4 batteries which do not last as long as 2 batteries in my 76C. Cheers, Olar
  23. In your unit go into geocaching setup and make sure that the "closed treasure chest" icon is selected to represent geocache waypoints. Now when you download waypoints, any that have the closed treasure chest will be considered geocaches and will be listed in the "geocache" folder as well as the all waypoints folder. Cheers, Olar
  24. Short of buying a mapping software package which usually gives you much better track editing tools, you can start with the latest version (6.10.2) of Mapsource which is a free download from Garmin. They have added the option of assigning tracks to display with a wide range of colours. It can be accessed by going into track properties. Olar
  25. I find when address searching it is better to put in too little information. The street number of course and then the street name but not the type (St., Rd., Cres., etc) and then the State or Province. You never know how they have it in the database so let the GPSr give you a choice of what it sees. City names can be different also. An example is a large city like Toronto which is made up of many boroughs (are they still called that?). The DB may have it as Scarborough but you enter Toronto or vice-versa. The search will only return those matching names for the area covered by your downloaded maps so the list usually isn't too long. Olar
