  1. Hi everybody!

I just got into this hobby and am currently in grad school at CWRU in Cleveland- found my first two caches today but there were also four caches today that I just couldn't find. Bit dejecting, don't think I'm that clueless... I suspect a reason is because all but one of the ones I have tried so far are micros in the University Circle area so they're just harder to spot, and poking around these boards reveals this is probably not the best sort of thing to start with. So does anyone know of any caches in the area good to cut my teeth on? I have a car and can drive, but just wanna whet my appetite before the snow flies and I lose most of my motivation to head outside.

    Thanks a lot everyone. :)

I would plan your trip first and just go looking for the larger caches. If you search by your zip code it will bring up all the caches in your area. Look for this icon 06665914-d7a2-478c-b7c7-8c16358d3a4d.jpg the first square is for micros, the next is smalls, then regulars, then larges. The last one is unknown size. I would start out with the regular and large cache container sizes. Smalls maybe. But, read up on the cache first and see if they indicate what the container is. Also, look for any local events and go to them. See if you can pair up with someone and go out caching for the day.

  2. The cache page will be listed sometime in the next few weeks, but save this date... May 15, 2010! The picnic will be held in the Lake Mississinewa area, details to follow. Hope to see lots of you there!

    Will be there

  3. In my opinion it seems that too many cachers in the area feel that an event must always correspond with the placement of new caches. To me that shouldn't matter. It should be everyone coming together and meeting up. Welcoming new cachers and just sitting around and talking about the things we like to do. I honestly feel this is why our monthly meet and greets fell to the wayside.

I agree, Jeff. I really look forward to our GiG meet-ups every month (in the Indianapolis area). We just hang out and socialize, no one runs off to cache (except maybe before or after the event :D). We've made lots of great friends through these gatherings.

Well, I could be wrong , but I think they went by the by because we became a little to "clicky"(the Hudson Haunted Event is not even listed on NEI-GEO site and I think there is another event this month in Goshen Area) . And because whenever there is a "Major" event , we do not hold a local event. Like Geobash Month ( no local event) or Indiana Fall Picnic Event ( held in southern Indiana) no local event. Or it could be even that no one had volenteered to host an event for the month either .. I am thinking that is probably it for the most part that its just that no one stepped up to the plate to host one . I dunno , lots of possible reasons .. and people do have busy lives sometimes !

Ok the Event in October is not in Goshen , its in South Bend and its called the MidWest MeetUp

I had offered starting up the possibility of doing the adopt a highway program. Only Four (4) commitments per year and everyone said NO. Even mentioned something along the line of what GIG does and even the NW Ohio group and holding smaller gatherings during the week and the interest was minimal. So, honestly I gave up. I think a Tuesday or Thursday get together would be nice and giving up a couple hours four times a year would be a good payback. However, getting a consensus from everyone in the area is not too easy. We do have an event next month Return to Our Roots Meet-n-Eat in Auburn. I guess we will see how that one goes.

  4. I'm an Eagle Scout and of course I'm a fan of backpacking and camping. But there aren't many people around here (that I've met) who have the same interest. Are there any Ohioans who are interested? I leave for West Point in July of 2010, so I'm looking for a few backpacking trips before then.

Good luck and have fun at West Point in July. As for the backpacking and camping events it all depends on how far you want to travel. I would check out the Event Calendar and see what events are scheduled around you. There are camping events the next couple weekends in Indiana. We are always up to a good hike.

  5. :( Hey all! I have a friend who is in the Toledo Ohio area who told me of their monthly "meet and eat" meetings, and it got me wondering if there is anything like that in the Northeast IN area? I would love to meet some other cachers nearby.

I have also been trying to join a couple of the yahoo groups for Indiana geocachers, but am still waiting for approval.....not sure what is going on.....any ideas?

  6. Hey Everybody,

I would like to introduce myself to all of you. I am new to geocaching community and I am new in Indiana too. ;) Its like to rabbits with one shot. But anyways I am still learning a lot of stuff about geocaching and I would like to join the club or meet some of you people. From your threads I can see that you guys meet quite often. I'd be glad to get more involved in Geocaching Community in Indiana.

P.S. I am in Fort Wayne area.

Welcome to the party. The next get together is next weekend. Great opportunity to get to know a bunch of people from all over the state and learn about Geocaching.

  7. My concern on this and why I require the photo is that the answers tend to be passed on between cachers. I have noticed where it appears that the verbiage is identical between emails sent as confirmation for visits for some cachers. They "visited" the EC days apart and never post a photo. Now, I'm left with a decision to make. They never emailed me indicating an issue with their camera. I'm flexible. I've even had cachers run into me in the field after finding one of my EC's and verbally give me the answers. Why have them email them to me then? I think we all are flexible if we would get an explanation from the cacher. A find posted months later and when reminded about the photo requirement the response was I'll have to look. I'm still waiting for the posted photo 3 weeks later. The photos to me, are really the only true proof we have that they were truly at the EC. Just my $0.02 or what's left of it now. Now, to go caching then to the lake.

  8. Emotion almost always trumps logic.

The only reason to carry firearms is if you intend to shoot someone, right?

Right, and those that "must" carry a gun to feel "safe" are just "afraid" and not simply "prepared" as they will claim.

I would love to see the stats on how many people's lives were saved because they had a gun on them (removing the part where they would have been fine if they didn't have a gun)

I'm sure the logic is the same as the seat belt arguments.

Interesting take on things. I've been carrying for quite some time now. In fact I have carried and used while I was in the Army. Now, back to Geocaching. Have I had the need to unholster my pistol? Not yet. However, as someone who tries to stay in shape I have unholstered it twice in the past 5 years. Both times have been in what some would call a decent neighborhood while I was out walking. Why? First I was walking my dog and another much larger dog came charging. I attempted to shout and distract the dog but, it did not stop the charge. As soon as it saw the pistol it stop and turned around. Obviously it had been shot at before. Second, I was walking again with some kids and some guy had another dog on one of those retractable leashes. The dog was terrorizing the kids (only a couple feet away) and after asking the guy to restrain the dog he continued to laugh. I had 3 kids crying and a dog snapping and barking. Only after pointing the pistol at the dog and saying last chance did the guy restrain the dog. The police later did issue him a citation.

A firearm can be use to shoot someone but, also can be used to diffuse a situation. Did I want to shoot a dog in front of 3 kids? Not really. However, each person has to take responsibility of their own actions. If this confrontation could happen in a neighborhood who's to say it can't happen somewhere else? Phones work great. But, the police can't arrive instantaneous. Your choice

  9. Just to let all of our Indiana friends know Braylon Isiah Wood was born Thursday August 6th at 12:43 am. He weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces and was 19 and a half inches long. We are all home now and doing good. We are adjusting to life with a new baby and a lot less sleep.

Braylon is already guarding his GPS and ready to find a cache. Now if he can just figure out was his caching name will be.

Ali Kat and Dubble Trouble are very excited to have a little brother and as soon as he whimpers they are right there to make sure he is okay.

Braylon is planning on doing his first event this weekend here in Michigan but is looking forward to meeting a lot of great Indiana cachers at the Indiana Fall Picnic in less than a month.

    Congrats!!!!!!!

  10. I need help! I was lucky enough to get one of the geocoins at the silent auction today, but when I went to try to retrive the activation code I wasn't able to. HELP!!!! It is the "Tribute to the Unknown Soldier" coin, and it is shaped like a pair of dogtags. I would really like to be able to activate this coin and send it on a mission, but without the code I can't. If anyone can help me find out how to get this coin actvated I'd appreciate it.

    Thank You!
