  1. I dunno about you guys and gals, but I love to read and write poetry, haikus, quotes, and other forms. I have a idea to place caches in the parks big enough to hold index cards for geocachers to find, read, and write poems or what ever. But here's the twist.. All poems have to stay and be apart of the individuals own series. As you visit the parks, bring your Geocaching equipment plus a lil note book to copy down your favorite poems or whatever. The more you visit the parks and Geocache the more you obtain lil parts of of an overal masterpiece!...

You might want to read the Cache Listing Requirements section. Under the section of Logging of All Physical Caches

This guideline change applies immediately to all logs written from April 4, 2009 and going forward. Older caches with "additional logging requirements" (ALRs) are not grandfathered under the older guideline. If you own an existing cache with mandatory additional logging requirements, we request that you:

    * Cease deleting logs based on additional logging requirements.

    * Review your own cache listing to see if the ALR can be made into an optional and simple task, or whether it must be removed altogether.

    * Adjust your geocache listing by editing the text then contact a reviewer to change the cache type, if appropriate.

This sounds like you are wanting the cacher / cache finder to log or write poems as part of the cache. If this is the case then don't be surprised if the cache isn't approved or if you can only politely ask this to be done as a optional requirement. You probably won't get many takers. If I'm misreading what you are saying and you are doing the poetry and you are just wanting people to copy it on the index cards you are providing then accept my apologizes.

Had a similar issue pop up yesterday. A wife of a cacher yesterday logged an EarthCache and back dated it to October. Said she was logging all caches found with her husband prior to getting her own caching name. When I checked yesterday she's been "active" with GC.com for less than a week and has over 1500 finds. There was no email to me with the required answers. The log stated that her husband sent the required answers at the time of their visit. Another photo was posted on the original log and I have no way to determine when it was uploaded. I don't keep everyone's emails once I verify the "find". So it is really up to you as the owner to make that determination.

What's frustrating to me on mine is that the wife's profile doesn't mention that she is logging caches found while being with her husband. So, based on that do I delete the find. However, her photo has mysteriously appeared on her husbands logged for the same date.

In your case I see it a little more simpler no photo, no email no find. Just my opinion.

My Earthcaches all say that I require unique answers from every account logging the find. Occasionally I get logs from people who ignore that, so I write to them and ask them for the required answers. If I don't get a response within a couple of days, I delete the log.

Didn't even think about that additional wording. That would make it easier than waiting for all the other logs to be posted.

  3. Not sure if this is the right thread but I would also like your opinion of cachers backdating Earthcaches to a date before it was published. That is: the cacher has been to the site but some 5 years before the earthcache was published.

I own the Earthcache Mt Kinabalu GC1B1K1 . Yesterday I had a relatively new cacher with less than 100 finds try to claim this cache. All the answers to the questions were wrong and he couldn't provide the photos that i requested. I explained that armchair caching was not acceptable and that i didn't accept backdated logs.

He replied and asked why his log was being deleted and then proceed to relog, three more times, the last with todays date. He seemed totally oblivious to the reason behind an earthcache, he just wanted the find ( its a 5/5) because he had been there at some point in his travels. :D

I don't believe this is in the spirit of geocaching. Am I being too harsh???? BUT what about all the cachers who have completed this the correct way, climbed the mountain and stopped to find the answers along the way???

    Your opinions are welcome.

  4. Log a "Needs Maintenance" and leave it at that. We came across a cache that was guarded by a rattlesnake today. When we looked at the logs, the last few were DNFs on account of snakes.

Again why add the "Needs Maintenance" log? If there is nothing wrong with the cache then why post that attribute. If you don't like snakes or other critters then don't do the cache. Now in my area it is Bald Eagle nesting time and a number of caches are being disabled because of the proximity of them to the nesting sites at the request of the DNR or property owners. However, posting "Needs Maintenance" because you might have a phobia to a critter???

  5. Wow, I don't visit the forums very often so I just discovered this spot thanks to Six Dog. Just for the record, I have 168 SQ finds (Indiana, Colorado, and Michigan so far) I hope to add Illinois in a couple of weeks. I still get the same thrill from visiting these old cemeteries as I did on my first find. In fact, it was my discovery of the ISQ series that got me into caching. I was already visiting the old cemeteries and using a GPS to record where they were and transcibing the stones to upload the information on www.internment.net before I found caching.

I've also placed 54, with #55 coming soon. 9 of my first 10 cache hides were ISQ caches. Hopefully, you've all checked out ISQ #688, which is a century challenge for those with 100 SQ finds. It's at the Centenary United Methodist Church cemtery on Centenary Road. Since Centenary means 100th anniversary, it just seemed destined for a 100-hide challenge cache once the non-ISQ cache there was archived.

I've also organized cachers to assist with the complete restoration of two cemeteries where ISQ caches were placed. For those of you who have helped with those CITO's, THANK YOU. For those who missed out, the others can tell you just how rewarding that work was, despite being hard work. The DNR coordinator for Hendricks County has moved to Vermont. I still want to do another restoration this year. GypsyDawg was was so taken by the experience that he and I have decided to attend the DNR workshops this year to become licensed restorers. I don't have all the equipment needed, but GypsyDawg is working on that. The first workshop is May 14-15. Wouldn't you know, the same weekend at the Indiana Spring Picnic event. We still might hook up with another county coordinator for this year, but we might soon be in a position to become self-sufficient for restoration CITO's. By the way, this type of work should not be undertaken without a trained restorer involved as it is easy to damage old headstones even if you have the best of intentions.

I'm also finding it great to see the idea spreading across the country. Sorry to go on so long, but I've missed out on a couple of years of postings here and feel the need to jump on board.

Been on both of the CITO's and they are great experiences. Thanks for putting them together. Too bad to see Jess move on but, I know you'll do a good job at this.

  6. Here's a cache that a newbie wants archived, that is in dire need of replacement/relocation, just in case somebody is in the neighborhood...

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...f0-abd140d11c4f

This one may need some TLC. But, newbies are getting carried away with the "Needs Archived" and "Needs Maintenance" logs. Had one this weekend that logged a DNF then logged a "Needs Maintenance". It was found multiple times over the last few weeks. Checked it last night and the cache was still there.

    Rick,

As long as I don't get stuck working Sunday, we'll try and get over there to check out the situation.

And, we also agree that newbies are definitely getting carried away with their "Needs Archived/Maintenance" logs. We just adopted several ISQ's from Team Tigger International & Mystery Dog, and went out to check on them & replace log sheets and such last Friday. On Saturday, we get a "Needs Maintenance" log and it started out with "Couldn't find it......"

Seriously, when did a "DNF" suddenly become a "Needs Maintenance"???

Here was the email that was sent back to me from the cacher that did the "Needs Maintenance".

mea culpa...i apologize for the maintenance error...i only recently have used that button and was unaware of the implications...did not mean to offend...

just that i too had a lot of security cars around us that day and was afraid that the cache had indeed been commandeered by them...

happy caching...perhaps i'll be back this summer to try again !!

From the sound of that and the DNF log I took it as they didn't try either.

  7. Team Tigger is moving all operations to Canada , in May ! :surprise: , If anyone is interested in Adopting some of our caches in Indiana , please contact us . Star is going to be moving !!

Wulf is in a union and tries to move as little as possible.

Anyways....anyone coming to play with us at the Belle Isle event this weekend?

Sorry, my brother is home on leave from playing Soldier gonna have a party.

  8. Same here everyone gets a follow up email from me.

I know I have always made it a practice to follow up with an email. However, I know I've done some where I have never received any response from the owner. Didn't know if this would be an alternative to those who had an issue to any photo's that once they received an acknowledgment then they deleted their photo. I know TPTB are saying something different at this point however, there are still some great EC's out there that are asking for photos.

  9. Question for everyone. How many EarthCache owners send out acknowledgment emails to those that have completed all necessary requirements to log a cache? Reason why I'm asking is that the old photo requirements I would have no issue that once I verified all requirements if a someone really had an issue of their image being out there that they could then delete the photo.

Still at this point I don't understand what the issue is with so many people being upset though with posting a photo at an EarthCache when you look at logs of them at other caches or events and they proudly post it there. And God forbid if you happen to be Facebook friends with them and you go to an event with them. You should see what they post there for the world to see. Just my take on the issue.

  10. Is this event open too all geocachers? Or is it for members of a geocaching group? We started geocaching last year and would love to meet other enthusiasts!!!

    Thanks,

    Dawn

Dawn, everyone is welcomed to attend. The more the merrier.

  12. I got a question for everyone. I know someone will probably have the answer. What are the top 10 most found caches in Indiana and how many times have each been found? If there is a query I can run or a bookmark to look at please let me know.

    Thanks!

Someone did that for each state. Actually think it was the top 5 but, don't remember where the thread was. Think ours were up in the Kendallville area because of the MWGB's.

  13. Off topic, can we suggest a cemetery to become an ISQ?

    http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lon=-87.5067&lat=39.6181

In november had to lay someone to rest there, and think that it's got an interesting history, and it's in a total cache vaccum since there was a strip-mine, and everyone basically forgot that area exists.

That's out of my range. If it's in yours go for it. Any cacher can do an ISQ.

Uh, not exactly. Cachers who want to join the quest as hiders need to contact us first. If they are literate and agree to our "8 simple Rules", as listed on our profile page, they're in!! ISQ has standards to maintain... :)

Well, he wasn't from Illinois so I assumed he was literate. :P

  14. I'm not going to name the cachers however, there was a rash of them who were doing what Cav Scout and LostBy7 were stating. They were passing around the answers to EarthCaches and basically logging them and never leaving home. Once one cacher fulfills the requirements for an EarthCache then anyone can log it if they start passing around the answers. Only way to stop/police this is with the photo of the cacher at the location.
