  1. Thanks, these are great suggestions! Checked out the Maritime group, some great posts there I will examine closer. Appreciate the help, very excited.
  2. Planning on a trip to Nova Scotia in late June. Does anyone have recommendations as to any caches there I shouldn't miss. Will likely be staying in the following towns...Brier Island, Pictou, Mabu, Halifax...points inbetween and along the way. What are your favorites? Thanks.
  3. Now that might also lead me to think to consider battery power as well...both units would have to have same brand of fresh batteries. I think a test like this would be educational to learn the limitations of a model of GPS, and gain some facts besides..."Garmin is better than xyz". How does one model of GPS differ between units.
  4. I was just reading some old discussions about satellite lock between unit x and unit y (etrex vs. explorist, quad vs. patch, etc.) My question is has anyone tried a side by side comparision of the same units (Etrex Legend vs. Etrex Legend, or Geko vs. Geko) as a control experiment? Lot of discussion in the past about "jumping around" or "off by". Will two units of the same make and model perfrom the same? We assume so, but who has tried it?
  5. You say it like its Navicache's fault there are no caches near you.....its not Navicache's fault, it the geocachers in the area. They made a choice, and the choice was they didn't want to list there. It doesn't mean Navicache shouldn't exist? Its the same with Buxleys. If you like GC's maps..use them. If you don't, like I don't, then I would rather use Buxleys. Now, I wish there could be an agreement betweent he two parties to share information. It seems Ed Hall is ready to talk about it, is GC? Elias? Jeremy? Is this a legal issue? Then call a lawyer? If not, why not talk about it. Buxley's is been crippled for three months, and nothing has been said. Break the silence.
  6. Recently I have been thinking about ONLY listing "there". I love Buxley's, and that is the only way for me to get my future hides listed there, so maybe I'll go exclusive. I have used GC more in the past, but its becoming a bit selective. Its the capitalist way, I understand, but the Big Frog is watching, and its a little creepy. Its like Sauron with a big Frog eye instead. What if GC packs up, goes under, crashes permanetlly? Where you going to get your fix?
  7. Do I need to start printing "SAVE BUXLEY" t-shirts, or is this something that is going to get solved soon? I gotta say, for the two years I have been geocaching, I have used Buxley's almost everyday. I am a visual person, and it was easier to see new caches pop up on a map, then on a list for me. I don't care if its two days later (I'm not a first finder). So, please tell me why Buxley's is being blocked. I don't understand the harm this site was causing...can someone explain it to me without legal or technical mumbo jumbo?
  8. Congrats Team GeoDillo! Will they make it a Three-peat next year? Looking at the stats, it is amazing anyone got east of the Mississipi, a much more north/south scatter of bugs I would say. My racer, Kodiak, just moved out of California this weekend to Reno, Nevada, hoping he can get further still. Now for those mysetery prizes....to what spoils go this victor? grrr...jackbear
  9. Well, I tend to be quiet most of the time, letting fate take its course in these kinda things that are way out of my control, but what the hey... I am in second to last place. My racer is Kodiak. It has moved some, that I am thankful for. It is not currently lost. That I am thankful for. I would like to get out of California however. The last log on my bug was..."Hmmmmm... What if Kodiak made a pit stop in one of my tough puzzle caches? Should I or should I not... ;-) We'll see where he goes... :-)" That worries me slightly. However, at least it is not sitting on a snowy mountain in the canadian rockies like my racer in the Coast to Coast Canadian race. Anyway, good luck all. I feel that this race is getting overshadowed right now by the Jeep promotion. Too bad really.
  10. A technique I have seen used to create cement planters was to dig a hole out in the ground, poor your cement into it, and place something in the cement to create a hollow space. Perhaps you could insert the ammo can into the wet cement upside down. The outside would be rough and uneven, stonelike, but perhaps still look like a lump of concrete, and not a real stone. grrr..jackbear

  12. Hey Halden has it right, though not the same reasons as me. I have an old Trimble Scountmaster GPS, and that clunky sucker doesn't have a compass, map, any of that stuff. It gives me a bearing to head, so I gotta carry a compass. Oh sure, I plan to one day upgrade, but it works, and its good at keeping my compass skills honed. But its a two handed operation, and that I don't like so much. Oh well, keep caching...no matter what you use. grrrr....jackbear
  13. Yeah, I went through that whole processing as well, can a UV trail be done. Came to same conclusion, cost is too great. Thought of leaving one of these nice UV flashlights at the trailhead in a pre-cache, but danger of it getting lifted seemed to high in my mind. Has anyone successfully done a UV cache? Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  14. Well, from the news I have heard (and I am quite far away) the backcountry ban has been lifted. The Rocket is ready to go if anyone is out that way. The Rocket at Idaho Peak Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  15. Houston, we have a problem.... Thanks for the info Gorak, I had not idea. Does anyone speak Grizzly? I think the Rocket will be stalled until spring unless there are any firefighters or rangers in the area. Thanks. Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  16. My travel bug, The Rocket, who is participating in the Coast to Coast Travel Bug race is in danger of being stranded on Idaho Peak for the winter. You see the trail to the peak is open from July to September, according to the cache page. The rocket will be trapped unless someone is able to rescue it from this peril and send it on its way. Looks like the road to the trailhead is difficult, and maybe a 4x4 would be wise. Who is the brave hero who can do this? Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  17. Sorry, I can't post anything right now, my power is out. Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  18. A wise and just ruling. Thank you all for your reasonable and accomondating manner. Let the race conintue...Thanks WhiteOwl and SteelHead! Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  19. Personally, I think it would be fair to move a bug back to the cache it was in, if it had been removed and not logged. I'm sure it was a mistake by the cacher who moved it in the wrong direction, but it could also have been another racer who was trying to mix-up the game a bit. Of course that is just paranoia, because it was MY BUG! AHHHH, I had no idea the Rocket was lifted and moved and messed up! Thanks for posting it! You never know these things if people don't log the bugs in and out! Guess I should keep track of the cache logs. Well thanks for the info, and my vote is, yes, yes, yes....it is fair! Whether is meets the rules, I'm not sure, but it is fair. Thanks for looking out for the Rocket (even if he is disliked by a few in those parts!) Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  20. Man, I got the same setup as TrackerGirl...Mac 9.x, Internet Explorer, was working fine, now...nothing. Opened it a friends with a PC and IE over weekend, thats fine. Yeah, its all cable too. Man, beats me what the issue is. Guess no free GPS's for me! Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  21. Mine is an adaptation of my real name, John Ballou. I was named after my great uncle Jack (John) Burrell. So in honor of his old nickname, I took Jack. The last name of Ballou is often recognized by folks from the bear in the Jungle Book. So I took the jack, and the bear, and we get jackbear. I do relate to the animal as well, and love id-ing tracks, so hence the avatar as well. Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  22. Hmmm...call me a skeptic, but I'm going to try to call this bluff. Its like watching the sheep going into the slaughter. I don't think there is a big secret here, and if there is, I don't want to know. Its like opening birthday presents before your birthday. Would rather experience it if it is some big cool cache idea. Besides, if I wanted Criminal to tell me, I would email him directly, not post it on here. Count me out. Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  23. Great prizes...shout out to the sponsors, and the organizers for doing the legwork to make that hoppen. Well, I had no expectations for my bug to do well in this race, but with those great prizes, maybe I'll hope a little harder. I don't think it will cause ill will amungst racers. Think of it like roulette, you have put your bug on a number, and who knows where the little ball is going to fall. Good luck to everyone, can't wait to get it underway. Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  24. Funny thing is, there is already a link to Infiltration.org. In Rochester NY you will find a cache down in the old subway tunnel, the same one described on infiltration.org. Gosh, what a strange alternative universe this is that I see...its coming true right before my eyes! Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
  25. Well, mine should be in the mail this week, so look out for The Rocket! Hey, if a hockey card can't make its way through Canada, I don't know what will! Grrrrrrrrr... jackbear
